Christmas Tree Festival to begin Dec 1st in New Bremen!

The New Bremen Historic Association is unveiling their 1st Annual Christmas Tree Festival following the New-Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on Thursday Dec 1st. The tree lighting takes place at 6:30 pm at Lock One North in downtown New Bremen. Visitors are invited to visit the Lockkeeper’s House afterwards to see the many decorations and Christmas trees on display.

The Lockkeeper’s House has been decorated from top to bottom,” said Scott Frey, Executive Director of the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce. “The New Bremen Historic Association has begun what I hope will become an annual tradition. It’s nice to see the community come together at this time of year to decorate and enjoy the holiday season.” The New Bremen Historic Association will hold an open house on Sunday December 4th, from 1:30 pm until 4:00 pm for folks to come visit the Lockkeeper’s House and enjoy the beautiful decorations. Otherwise, the public can visit the Lockkeeper’s House during chamber of commerce hours from 9:00 -11:00 am and 1:00 - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite tree or decoration. The votes will be tallied and prizes will be awarded to the winning displays. There is no cost to see the decorations.

“The New Bremen Historic Association provides an important service to our community, by helping to preserve a living record of our local history,” said Frey. “This event is a way for the community to come out and support our local historians and thank them for this service.” Proceeds raised from the Christmas Tree Festival participants will benefit the New Bremen Historic Association.

Think about how much of an impact your local merchants have on your local economy! The folks at American Express know this, and they know it well! They've created the "Small Business Saturday" movement and it is really gaining momentum in its second year. The idea not only to "shop small" but to publicly pledge to do so and invite your network to do the same.

Typically, about $.68 of every $1.00 spent locally remains in the local economy and "turns over" an estimated 6 times. Local business pays local employees, buys local suplies and services, pays local taxes. However, many local businesses invest in their communities by donating money, good and services to schools, churches, food pantries and other non-profits. It's also important to note that small businesses employ the majority of workers in the U.S. And, from my perspective and experience I have found that small businesses typically provide the best consultation during the purchase process and best service after the sale.

German Family Christmas offers shoppers chance to win big this weekend!!

“This year, we’re trying something a little different with German Family Christmas,” said Scott Frey, Executive Director of the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce. “Businesses and organizations across the Golden Triangle have donated items and gift certificates for our three prize packages.” Frey explained that shoppers can register to win at each of the participating locations during German Family Christmas weekend November 11th, 12th and 13th. “We’ll draw a third place winner, a second place winner and then a Grand Prize Winner from all the entries collected over the weekend,” said Frey. “Our grand prize package is worth over $1,500.00, the second prize package is worth over $900.00 and the third prize package is worth over $600.00. We asked our chamber members to help support this year’s event and they did in a huge way.”

Highlights include a 1-year membership to the Auglaize-Mercer County Family YMCA and two season tickets for New Bremen boys basketball. “Our winners will be very pleased with their gifts,” said Frey. “This adds some excitement to the weekend, to go along with the fun holiday atmosphere the shoppers will enjoy with our merchants. We cannot thank our chamber members enough for their generous donations.”

Local Shops Prepare for German Family Christmas 2011!

Preparations are under way in the Golden Triangle in advance of the annual German Family Christmas Holiday Open House weekend. The event is set to take place November 11th, 12th and 13th in Minster and New Bremen. Local shops will offer special promotions, discounts and activities to kick off the holiday shopping season. Shoppers can register at participating businesses to win one of three valuable gift baskets worth over $2,600.00!! The grand prize basket contains over $1,200.00 in gift certificates and products from Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber businesses.
Trupointe Cooperative in Minster will host a petting zoo from 9 am until 5 pm on Friday and again from 9 am until 1 pm on Saturday. New Bremen Coffee Co. and Books will be open Saturday from 8 am until 4 pm and will feature a book signing at 11 am, and Storytime and Craft Activity will begin at 11:30. . Octobter is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Local residents can show their support by attending the “Festival of Hope: Families Standing Together for Peace” on Sunday October 23rd, 2011.

The event begins at 2:00 pm with a vigil at the Salem United Methodist Church in Wapakoneta. The “Walk of Hope” will begin following the vigil, taking a path through Wapakoneta from Salem United Methodist Church to Veteran’s Park. The festival will continue until 5:00 pm with live music and other activities. There will be music, fun and food for all ages at Veteran’s Park.

Let’s stand together to show that domestic violence has no place in our communities!

I just arrived home after attending the United Way 2011 Campaign Kickoff Dinner. I had to hop on and share my experience with you.

This evening, Rand Fisher, the Executive Director of the United Way of Auglaize County hosted a large group at Easy Restaurant on US 33 to celebrate the results from the 2010 campaign along and kick off the 2011 campaign by sharing the results of the 2011 Pacesetters. After a delicious dinner and a viewing of the 2011 United Way Campaign video, Steve Walter (President, United Way of Auglaize County Board of Directors) introduced the 2011 Campaign Chairman Rex Katterheinrich. Mr. Katterheinrich gave an compelling talk about the good works done in Auglaize County by the 20 local agencies funded by the United Way of Auglaize County. Rex spoke about what it means to him to live united and help the United Way of Auglaize County reach their 2011 campaign goal. The United Way Board of Directors have chosen an ideal leader for their 2011 campaign.

After Mr. Katterheirich's remarks, several county businesses and organizations were honored for their 2010 campaign results including: New Knoxville Schools, Setex, AAP of St. Marys, Precision Strip, Dannon, The City of Wapakoneta and Midwest Electric. They were the top fundraisers in their respective categories. After announcing that the goal for the 2011 is set at $300,000.00, Executive Director Rand Fisher honored the two Pacesetter Campaign winners for 2011. Wapakoneta City Schools was chosen as the Education Pacesetter this year and they raised over $4,500.00, a new record for them. Grand Lake Health Systems raised over $20,000.00 for the first time as the Corporate Pacesetter for 2011. Based on the performance of our two 2011 Pacesetters, the goal of $300,000.00 is certainly attainable.

Rand Fisher gave a very inspirational talk about how many Auglaize County residents are served each year by United Way partner agencies. His talk struck me so strongly I felt compelled to come home and encourage our communities to consider giving to this year's United Way campaign. Over 25,000 Auglaize County residents are assisted by United Way partner agencies each year. In a county of about 42,000 residents, that's a staggering number of folks that need help. The United Way helps our county agencies educate children, keep seniors living with dignity in their homes, help people in times of disaster, provide mentoring for youth, support scouting programs, help support cancer patients and survivors, provide food to the hungry and many other vital services. In a time when grants and other funding options are being reduced, leaving these important agencies with less funding to make a difference, we need to pull together as a community and pitch in.

I have had direct experience with several of these agencies through my work at the chamber and through other organizations I am associated with. I've seen the lives they change with my own eyes. I've listened to the stories and looked into the eyes formerly frightened and lonely seniors who had no one to turn to for help until they found the Auglaize County Council on Aging. I've seen and helped young Cub Scouts grow in the scouting program. I've delivered food to Agape Ministries with the Cub Scouts and I've heard the stories of how many more people Agape is helping through the down economy. I've met some of the youth who volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and heard the stories of the children they help. With one out of two of our Auglaize County residents benefitting from these vital services, we owe it to our neighbors to live united.

Living united is simple: give, advocate and/or volunteer. If you cannot afford to give a monetary donation, consider speaking to someone who can. Consider speaking with your employer about setting up a payroll deduction program to make it easier for employees to give. Consider volunteering for a Day of Caring event in the spring and pitch in to help a local agency with an important project. Consider talking with your circle of friends about how oyu can help make a difference in the 2011 campaign. Consider putting out a yard sign, or passing out pledge cards and United Way brochures. Write a letter to the editor about one of the United Way partner agencies you know that's changing the life of someone you know.

There are more people than we realize in our communities that need our help. The United Way helps local agencies bring that help out into the community. Please consider a gift, a yard sign, a conversation and live united!

United Way of Auglaize County Annouces Pacesetter Results

The United Way of Auglaize County’s first Pacesetter Campaign wrapped up Friday as Grand Lake Health Systems at Joint Township District Hospital celebrated the conclusion of another successful campaign.

Grand Lake Health Systems Director of Planning, Marketing and Compliance Martin Dodrill as well as Community Outreach Coordinator and United Way Campaign Chairperson Cindy Gaerke presented a check for $20,103.50 to the Executive Director of The United Way of Auglaize County Randy Fisher. (see attached picture)

Grand Lake Health Systems was once of two Pacesetter Campaigns who’s results will be announced along with the 2011 United Way of Auglaize County Campaign Goal at The 2011 Campaign Kickoff Dinner at Easy Campground on October 2, 2011.

The United Way of Auglaize County would like to thank Grand Lake Health Systems for conducting what is one of the most crucial work place campaigns we have. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Cindy Gaerke and her steering committee made of Michelle Emerine, Jane Weigel, Sarah Katterheinrich, Amy Schlenker and Ammy Snyder for their extraordinary effort that makes this campaign so successful.

They're back in town!

That's right, the New Bremen Pumpkin People are back among us once again as a prelude to the 2011 Pumpkinfest! Over 20 businesses in town have signed up to participate in this year's Pumpkin People Contest. The Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the New Bremen Community Improvement Corporation to put on the contest again this year. We've got a more creative line-up of Pumpkin People than ever!! Visit them all and vote for your favorite!

Our Administrative Assistant Pam Sager put together a fun, creative creature right outside our front door, the Lock Less Monster. This one if just for fun, so don't vote for her!

You can vote at each business, votes will be collected Monday September 26th. The Chamber will award a $100.00 membership discount to the winning business. We'll also draw three ballots from all the votes collected. Pumpkinfest 2011, right around the corner!

Believe it or not, it’s already time for Pumpkinfest! How do we top two huge pies, crushed cars, pumpkin boats, 80’ cranes and pumpkin race cars?? Since we’re in the business of mixing giant pumpkins with thrills, spills and destruction, we’re going to bring back many of the old favorites!! But this year we’ve gone back to the drawing board in order to add a little something extra to the weekend.

There’s a Cyclone coming to town in the form of a giant monster truck!! On Saturday at 5:45pm, you can watch Chuck Sisson of Marion, Ohio drive his beastly monster truck Cyclone over a pile of junk cars and onto a giant pumpkin. The destruction will take place at Jaycee Park along the canal. Spectators will be able to safely witness the carnage from across the canal and from the new Plum St. parking lot.

As if that weren’t enough, we’ve added the Mayor’s Challenge Pumpkin Regatta on the Miami and Erie Canal! Watch as New Bremen Mayor Jeff Pape defends the canal from all mayoral challengers from around the region!! Who will be able to capture the inaugural MCPR title? You’ll have to come see it in person to find out. ESPN can’t even get the broadcast rights to this race!

And speaking of rights and filming, the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Grower’s Association will be welcoming a film crew from High Noon Productions in Colorado to town. They are producing a show entitled PumpkinPalooza for The Weather Channel and will be shooting footage of our festival for the show. You can expect all the usual favorites again this year at Pumpkinfest! Starting at 6pm Friday night, we’ll be tailgating and watching high school football highlights on 4 giant flat-panel TV screens. Enjoy live rock and roll from the Cracker Jax Band on Friday evening, and check out Flight Risk and the Reaganomics on Saturday evening. The festival gets going early Saturday morning with the annual 5K run, the New Bremen St. Paul UCC pancake breakfast, and the arrival of the giant pumpkins. On Saturday afternoon, we’ll show the Ohio State Buckeye football game as the pumpkin pie bake-off and giant pumpkin weigh-off take place in the Pavilion. And once again, we welcome pumpkin sailboats to Bunker Hill Pond at Noon for the Annual Sailboat Regatta!

Of course there will be pumpkin everything including: ale, pies, race cars, brats, pancakes, sailboats and more! There’s something to do for everyone with kids inflatable rides, a pie eating contest, a show with Rhonda’s School of Dance, and an excellent collection of crafters and vendors to visit with all day Saturday! My family and I recently took a summer vacation trip to the Outer Banks, NC. My son and I had never been there, and my wife hadn't been there in years, so it was set to be a special summer vacation. Plus, this would be our son's first opportunity to see the ocean. People were very friendly there, the food was great and the ocean was incredible! I think that for many folks, the "vacation trap" is that we visit a really great place and begin to feel badly about our home. We wish we could stay there, move there to live, work and play. "Anything would be better than boring old home!!" I've had that happen on other trips, I can relate.

But, this trip was different for me. As amazing as the Outer Banks are, as beautiful and relaxing as the beach is, I was ready to be at home by the time we left. It wasn't because we were having a bad time, or because the weather wasn't cooperating. No, we actually had as perfect a trip as a family could expect. The weather was great, the motel was perfect, we didn't even buy too many souvenirs and trinkets. We avoided the worst traffic both coming and going, the car ran great and nobody even argued!

Home in the Golden Triangle has come to be a very special place, and I was reminded of that as we drove through numerous communities on our way to and from our vacation spot. Our towns are clean and neat. Our businesses are propserous and community-minded. We're committed to providing a good education and safe, reasonably fun place to live for our families. We're welcoming to visitors without "selling our souls" to attract tourists. We are who we are: a tough, kind, giving, hard-working bunch. At the end of the day, we can sleep at night based on how we live, work and play.

This isn't to say that our region is home to the only nice places in our country. But I think we've built something very special around here, and I hear it time and time again at the Chamber of Commerce, when people from out of town visit. Visitors marvel at the cleanliness, the architecture, the businesses, the homes and how nice everyone is. And, the visitors I'm referring to aren't always just friends and family. These visitors are often here on business, or traveling abroad from Europe and Asia. They've been out and about and have seen many places. They can compare us to the world, and they are always very impressed.

It's great to go visit really nice places, but it really is a treat to be reminded of just how nice we have it around here. It's nice to be sitting on a beach, looking forward to returning to our home here in SW Auglaize County.

This is a special weekend in the Golden Triangle of Southwestern Auglaize County! Of course, we're celebrating the 235th birthday of our beloved country, and we're doing that in style in New Knoxville all weekend long. However, we're also going to be celebrating the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Village of New Knoxville with a special parade at 4pm on Saturday afternoon. New Knoxville has such an interesting, unique history worth celebrating. The community was settled by a small group of families from a town in Germany, Ladbergen. Why is that a big deal you ask? Well, the fact of the matter is, that the community continued to be settled by families from Ladbergen, settled almost entirely by families from Ladbergen, Germany. This is a perfect example of what is referred to as "chain migration." A group from one community settled here in the U.S. and began sending word home about the wonders and the bounty of this area and more families from the same community followed and developed the town here.

New Knoxville, OH and Ladbergen, Germany share a special history together, and still keep in touch with one another today. A visit to the New Knoxville Heritage Center provides an excellent and interesting trip through the history of New Knoxville and western Ohio. The New Knoxville Historical Society and the community of New Knoxville have done a brilliant job of saving and cataloguing artifacts and and records to display for the public. Consider visiting us this weekend in New Knoxville to celebrate our nation's birthday! The fun begins at 8:30 am on Saturday with the Firecracker 5K and runs through midnight on Sunday evening following the incredible fireworks display. The New Knoxville Cub Scouts officially open the festivities with the Flag Ceremony at 11:30 am Satuday and The Way International Choir provides a fitting tribute with a concert at noon on Saturday. The Woody Piehl Wooden Bat Softball Tournament runs all weekend, there will be lots of food, games, prizes, rides and activities all weekend long. Be sure to stop by and say hello at the Chamber of Commerce Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich stand at the north end of the park. Our sandwich stand is a fundraiser for the Village of New Knoxville Community Park Board and the Chamber of Commerce. We're catered by Todd Smith and the gang at Easy's Restaurant/Campgrounds and man, can they put together some amazing pulled pork BBQ!!

We'll have live music both evenings, on Saturday The Earthquakers hit the gazebo, and on Sunday Exploit takes over. Sunday morning features a community church service at 10:15 in the park, a pie baking/judging contest at noon in the shelter house and little league baseball all afternoon. US Representative Jim Jordan visits Wapakoneta Rotary Club

This past Monday, I had the opportunity to attend the Wapakoneta Rotary Club, where US Congressman Jim Jordan (R), OH 4th District gave a talk on the ongoing budget talks in Washington D.C. I make an effort to hear our elected officials speak whenever possible because I believe it is important for the chamber (and myself) to stay informed on what's happening in Columbus and Washington D.C. I took notes during the talk, and here's an overview of what Mr. Jordan discussed:

Congressman Jordan began his talk by providing the context in which the budget discussion is taking place. "The world is a better place when we lead," said Jordan. "We cannot be a diplomatic and military world leader if we're not an economic leader. Right now, we have the wrong tax, energy, fiscal and regulatory policies in place." Jordan chairs the Republican Study Committee's (RSC) Budget and Spending Task Force. The RSC is the caucus of House conservatives founded in 1973 for the purposes of advancing a conservative and social economic agenda in the US House of Representatives. Jordan cited American business owners' recent testimony before Congress regarding the current business regulatory environment as examples of poor policy. "The last question asked at the hearing says it all," said Jordan. "If you knew all of the government hassles that were coming, would you have started your business?" All five business owners asked (including Mr. Jack Buschur of Minster) answered that they would not have started their businesses.

Jordan used a family budget example to describe the current fiscal policy in the U.S. The fiscal policy is "equivalent to a family earning $50,000.00 and spending $85,000.00 year after year," said Jordan. In 2009 the Jordan-led RSC Budget and Spending Task Force presented the only balanced budget alternative to President Obama's budget. This year, the RSC introduced a budget that would balance in 9 years, compared to the budget presented by Congressman Paul Ryan that would balance in 26 years. Jordan reported that one-hundred and three conservative members sent a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) containing three key actions that must be taken before the conservative group would vote to raise the debt ceiling: cut spending significantly, cap spending to 18% of GDP, and pass a balanced budget amendment. "You have to quit spending more money than you take in, we're not borrowing any more," said Jordan.

Jordan recalled the Tony Blankley piece from the Dec 22, 2010 Jewish World Review, here is an excerpt from the article: "Then the American miracle occurred - not in Washington, but in the hearts and heads of the American people. The polls started to show that the American people wanted Washington to do less, not more. They didn't want to be sheltered under the wing of the state. The American people feared the permanent loss of liberty more than they feared the temporary loss of their income or property." Jordan used this example to support the idea that Americans want government to stop spending, work to reduce the national debt, and reduce the roadblocks to business growth with regard to regulatory policy. "I think we're going to see a resurgence of core values in America," said Jordan. Jordan stressed the importance of reducing US reliance upon foreign energy resources by developing a more coherent domestic energy policy, citing the cheap dollar, supply/demand, unrest in the Middle East and speculation as reasons for high gas prices. "The day you make a decision to increase the domestic supply, it sends a message to the markets," said Jordan. "Make a committment to develop the resources, that will affect the market." Jordan noted that the ANWAR oil fields are 75 miles from the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline, explaining that oil production in ANWAR would provide a cost-effective means of increasing domestic supply, and create jobs, without risk to the environment.

When asked what advice he would have for young people considering public service. "Don't let people discourgage you," said Jordan as he related the story of being strongly discouraged to run during his first bid for public office. "We need young people involved in government."

The latest installment in the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce Lecture Series is entitled: “How to Get the Most From Your Chamber Investment.” The free event will take place on Wednesday June 22nd at 10:00 in the upper meeting room of the Miami and Erie Canal Visitors Center (the Lockkeeper’s House) in downtown New Bremen. Who was the Lockkeeper?

Mary Ann Olding, a local historian, teacher, writer, and world traveler has done a great deal of research into New Bremen history. Her many research projects include the mystery of the Lockkeeper's House (also known locally as the Thompson house), named for it's most well known lock tender.

Ms. Olding joins us as a guest blogger, and offers a brilliant description of New Bremen's most well-known lock tender:

"Thomas B. Thompson, NB Lockkeeper

Thomas B. Thompson was an interesting man who became the best known lockkeeper at New Bremen’s Lock 1 North. Born in Pennsylvania on January 9, 1832, he was one of those early 19th century adventuresome frontiersmen who looked for opportunity in numerous places during the early days of this country’s canal and railroad era. At age 19, he came to Piqua, Ohio, where he worked on packet boats on the Miami and Erie Canal. He helped build the Dayton & Michigan Railroad, a line begun in 1851 that paralleled the canal through Botkins and Anna. Not liking railroad work, he roamed the country for a couple of years. He returned to Piqua where he was the proprietor of a saloon, later had a bakery, and then a confectionary business. He traveled to nearby small towns selling from a huckster wagon making frequent trips to New Bremen and staying at the local hotels. While in Piqua, he also bought and sold timber; bought, sold and operated boats; and owned as many as seventeen boats on the Miami and Erie Canal.

After the Civil War ended in 1865, Thompson moved to Dayton where he ran a grocery and saloon for six months. On June 2, 1868, he married his boss’s sister, Mary E. List. The next year on April 27, 1869, they boarded a packet and came to New Bremen, a village of immigrants of German descent. For almost 40 years, Thompson played an important role in the village’s progress; however, he did not become New Bremen’s lockkeeper upon arrival.

For the first two or three years, the Thompsons rented a house from which he conducted a grocery and saloon, and George L., their first of nine children, was born on October 26, 1870. He sold that business, and moved to Washington Street where he operated a saloon until about 1876 or 1877. At this time, “he purchased the house at the lock, and for many years conducted a boarding and lodging house. He also conducted a livery barn a few years, and always had one or more teams busy . . . he did all kinds of hauling and teaming, always being his own manager in whatever he undertook, at times having more irons in the fire than the average man is able to manage.”(1) While Thompson was the lockkeeper, New Bremen’s economy and prosperity flourished with mills and industries due to its abundant water supply and its prominent location at Lock 1 North.

Mrs. Thompson died on March 11, 1905, of cancer. A week later, her husband had a private sale of “a five-room brick house on South Washington Street, two teams, wagons, harness and beds of all kinds, faming utensils of all kinds, top wagon, top buggy and bobsled.” Until his death, he owned TR 8 & 9, outlots 5 & 6, where the lockkeeper’s house is located. Thomas B. Thompson died just before Christmas in 1907, at age 75, thus ending the colorful life of a 19th century Miami and Erie Canal entrepreneur.

The property that contained the lockkeeper’s house was transferred on January 1, 1908, to a son, Walter G. Thompson. About 1910, the original wooden lock was replaced with a concrete structure that was rebuilt and dedicated in 2007 by the Village of New Bremen. Whether Walter Thompson succeeded his father as lockkeeper is not known. After the Great Flood of 1913 heavily damaged the entire Miami and Erie Canal system, Walter Thompson continued to own the property until at least 1920. His name appears on the property where the reconstructed lockkeeper’s house now stands, as shown on a blueprint of the canal and its surroundings on a 1920 map drawn by H. E. Whitlock for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources."

VALU Class heads out to the farm!

On Thursday May 19th, the Auglaize County VALU Class spent the day touring agricultural concerns in and around Auglaize County. We began our day with a visit to the Auglaize County OSU Extension office in Wapakoneta, with a program given by John Smith. John shared many facts about agriculture in Auglaize County. Where there were once over 150 dairy herds in the county, we're down to 98 today. According to the USDA 2007 Agriculture Census, Auglaize County ranks 8th in Ohio for agricultural production, with 213,296 acres on 1,059 farms, producing $138,607,000.00 in products sold (48% of that is crop sales, 52% is from livestock sales. From there, we traveled east to Manchester Farms in New Hampshire. Tim Manchester is the 5th generation in his family to operate his farm. Manchester Farms is well known for two things, the big round barn (see photo above) and growing pop corn. The round barn was constructed in 1908, and is a fine example of the efficient use of space available in a round configuration. Tim plants hundreds of acres in pop corn for Orville Reddenbacher and Pop Secret.

We headed west to New Knoxville to visit the largest dairy operation in the county, Almar Farms. Almar Farms is operated by third generation dairy farmer Tom Henschen and his wife Marlene. They are presently milking over 350 Holstein cows, with a total population of over 400 Holsteins at several locations. Their full capacity is about 460 milking cows. They milk in three shifts each day, each shift taking about 5 and a half hours to complete. Their milk goes to Dannon in Minster, but has been sold as far away as Winchester, Kentucky. (A few of the girls are pictured below, names withheld to protect their identity!)

After an interesting lunch discussion panel at Lost in the 50's Diner in St. Marys featuring John Bergman (Aug. Cty Commissioner/grain farmer), Kevin Doseck (Regional Mgr., TruPointe Cooperative), and Mark Flock (President, Brookside Laboratories, Inc.), we returned to New Knoxville to visit a hog farm operated by Brent and Rita Henschen. Brent operates what is known in the hog industry as "finishing buildings." His two buildings house hundreds of hogs, one building for females, one for the males. They arrive at Henschen's farm weighing around 45 lbs each, and when they depart for the market, they are well over 150 lbs. The "finishing" process takes 3-4 months, after which time the buildings are completely cleaned out and another group of hogs arrives. Brent farms over 200 acres west of New Knoxville, raising corn and beans in addition to the hog operation.

The final stop on the tour took us to Trupointe Cooperative in Botkins, for a tour of the fertilizer plant. Their facility is capable of unloading 65 rail cars full of fertilizer in an 8 hour shift and they supply dry and liquid fertilizer to farmers all over Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Trupointe is able to blend fertilizers to the exact specifications of their farmer-member clients, and have their clients trucks loaded in just a few minutes. It really is an amazing operation, given the volume of fertilizer and grain they handle there.

Auglaize County is part of a four-county region (including Mercer, Darke and Shelby Counties) that accounts for one of the largest livestock concentrations in the world, and produces over $1,000,000,000.00 (that's billion with a B) in agricultural products annually. This is always an eye-opening day for the VALU Class students!

An important summer season!!

We have an important summer before us when it comes to the situation with Grand Lake St. Marys. Here is the "Chamber Voice" piece for May 2011 as printed in the St. Marys Evening Leader and Minster Community Post, addressing the concerns at the lake:

"As we prepare for another hot and humid summer, I think we need to take a moment and think about our progress at Grand Lake St. Marys. As the Executive Director of the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce, a businessman, and a concerned citizen in the Grand Lake St. Marys region, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of the water quality issues on local business and it has not been pretty. I’ve had occasion to meet with and listen to government officials, Lake Restoration Commission officials, local business owners, agricultural producers, and agri-business concerns. After each of those meetings and conversations, I’ve come away with a very positive outlook on what’s being done to improve the water quality in Grand Lake St. Marys.

But let’s look at reality here… This summer, we’re bound to have another algae bloom with all of the rainfall, runoff, and nutrients still present in the watershed and in the lake. I think we’d be fooling ourselves if we expect there to be a summer with no advisories or warnings due to algae. The issues with the lake have taken years to develop and they will take time to resolve. We have to accept that. So, let’s all take a deep breath here and continue our laser focus on the solution, as a community. Last summer, I encouraged businesses and consumers in the Golden Triangle to think about the lake-related businesses when they consider their discretionary spending. I’m encouraging folks around here to do so again this summer as we enter the outdoor activity season. We can each have a positive impact on our local economy in this way.

The Lake Restoration folks have been working diligently with a much more receptive state government, and a detailed, multi-faceted strategic plan has been developed and is currently being implemented. Excellent efforts are being made by local farmers and agri-businesses to help mitigate and control the amount of nutrients in the watershed. Folks who were formerly at odds are finding themselves working together to develop these solutions. Consumers and businesses in and around the watershed have begun to develop a more environmentally friendly lifestyle with their choices in yard and garden treatment products. It is vital that we continue these positive efforts if we hope to eventually improve the water quality in Grand Lake St. Marys. We cannot allow finger-pointing and bickering to creep back into the culture surrounding the lake restoration efforts.

My hope is that with the first stage of alum treatments, the treatment train implementation on the feeder streams, the increased aeration projects, rough fish removal, increased dredging, and all of the continued research, we’ll at least have a less severe algae bloom this summer. From what I have observed with the State of Ohio, it appears that they will take a more reasonable and common-sense approach to the advisories and warnings once an algae bloom develops. There is much to celebrate already, and the work has only just begun! The research and strategic plan being implemented at Grand Lake St. Marys is well ahead of most other locations fighting the same algae issues. There will be new businesses developed and long-term positive economic development realized as a result of the water quality issues in the lake (the proverbial “silver lining”).

So, let’s try to remember that we all benefit from a successful restoration effort, and we all have much to lose if we “go negative” at the first sign of another algae bloom. There is far too much at stake for us to lose our focus and momentum at this point. This summer will prove to be a critical period of time in the lake restoration effort: not because we experience another algae bloom, but because of how we handle it when it happens."

Sunshine Project 5K Run/Walk a success!!

The New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Club Sunshine Project Committee wishes to say thanks very much to everyone who came out and ran or walked in the 1st Annual Sunshine Project 5K Run/Walk, including Benson the Newfoundland therapy dog!! Families, runners of all ages, special needs kids, WCSM Radio, and many Rotarians turned out to support the event on a beautiful Saturday morning at the East Bank of Grand Lake St. Marys.

Over 145 people participated in the event on Saturday May 7th, to raise money and awareness for special needs children in west central Ohio and east central Indiana. All proceeds from the 5K will go to the Sunshine Playground project. The Sunshine Playground is a 100% handicapped accessible ADA-approved playground that will be built at Bremenfest Park in New Bremen and will be the only one of its kind within an 80-mile radius. The Committee has raised over $107,000.00 in committed funds from donations, in-kind services, and grants. The total cost of the project is estimated at $227,000.00, and the Sunshine Playground is scheduled to be completed in August of 2012. The Club has been working on grants and contacting businesses and organizations to raise funds for several months. This event kicked off the public fundraising component of the project. Phosphorus for Dummies

I grew up sailing and swimming in the waters of Lake Erie. In the early 70s the water of my Great Lake was murky. One sign of the lakes’ poor water quality was the green slime that collected on my bathing suit.
Poor water quality is nothing new and our local water problems didn’t just pop-up last year. In the 1970s motor boat props would whip up a trail of soap bubbles that congregated into flotillas of foam.

Laundry detergent was the principal source of phosphorus then affecting our lakes. Today the problem is still phosphorus, but from multiple sources. So what is this chemical and how does it get into our lakes?

Seeing an opportunity for education and material for this column, I attended the Ohio Lake Management conference March 18 in Celina to learn more about harmful algae blooms plaguing our local lake. Gail Hesse from the Ohio EPA began her presentation by stating that “The more you know (about phosphorus), the more you realize what you don’t know.” With my shallow knowledge of chemistry, I quickly discovered that I was in deep water.

Think of phosphorus as plant food because, along with potash and nitrogen, it makes up the primary ingredients in fertilizer. With the chemical symbol of P, atomic number 15, phosphorus is essential for forming cell membranes in all living things. Plants and animals need phosphorus to grow.

So if we need phosphorus for life, why is it a problem? Excess phosphorus in the soil leaches into our waterways. Harmful algae blooms (HABs) are created when a surge of nutrients feed the ever present cyanobacteria (aka, blue-green algae). When there is too much phosphorus in water and conditions are ripe, HABs can occur.

According to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, ¼ of Ohio waters are experiencing problems with HABs and most are concentrated in northwest Ohio, including Grand Lake St. Marys. The intensity of agricultural production in this region, high fertilizer use, and greater quantities of manure are part of the equation.

Where does phosphorus come from? It comes from farm and lawn fertilizer, animal waste, yard clippings, waste water and septic systems, and soil erosion. Adding to the problem is internal loading of phosphorus. Wind, which we have in abundance locally, causes waves that churn up the silty bottom of the lake, reintroducing phosphorus that had settled. Plant and animal waste also release phosphorus into the environment.

Conference speakers offered a great deal of scientific based information but had no silver bullet or single solution to address the problem. There are carrots ($$) to encourage good practices and fines to discourage poor ones. A suite of practices was suggested, prescribed field by field for fertilization of farm land. The development of laws to enforce best practices will help lead to a solution. Manufactures are also moving toward phosphorus-free fertilizers while phosphorus-laden detergents are being regulated.

So what can we do to help? Purchase laundry and dishwasher detergents that reduce or eliminate phosphorus. Test the soil and apply only the prescribed amount of fertilizer on lawns, farms, and gardens. Protect soils from running off into the water. Perhaps the best way one person can have an effect on this big problem is to join with others and support agencies working to find solutions.

If you've been a reader of this blog, you know that I believe in community service. We get so much from our communities, we owe it to the greater good to give back. It's the responsibility that comes with being a part of a community. We're blessed to live in wonderful communities just bursting at the seams with people who "get it." There are many folks who give of their time and resources to make our communities some of the finest places in America to work, play and raise our families. One of the signs of a strong community is the presence and impact of service organizations. Each of our communities has organizations geared toward helping kids, preserving our history, helping seniors, nurturing the environment (both natural and man-made resources), and developing a healthy, diverse, sustainable and vibrant economy. These organizations represent the best of what we have to offer here in west central Ohio. Over the years, these groups have given rise to a multitude "game-changing" projects and movements that have helped countless folks better themselves.

One such project I am grateful and blessed to be a part of is the New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Sunshine Project. Our group is working to help special needs children and their families find an easier way through a life that offers challenges I cannot imagine facing. As a result of my membership in Rotary, I've had the pleasure of meeting a special little girl named Camryn, through her aunt Kristin. Camryn's unquenchable smile and indomitable spirit has inspired our group to develop this project and it has taken off and soared with an energy none of us ever anticipated. Sadly, Camryn passed away in May of 2009 (before I was ever able to see her smile in person) but her fight lives on in our project. We're collecting, cleaning, repairing and distributing medical and therapy equipment to special needs children in the area, and now we're working to construct a fully accessible playground at Bremenfest Park in New Bremen. The Sunshine Playground will not only serve special needs kids and their families, but all children are welcome to play together at the facility. This playground will be the only one of its kind within about a 70-mile radius. The Sunshine Playground is on track to open in August of 2012, provided we are able to raise the $250,000 needed to complete the project. To date, we've raised just over $100,000.00 in committed funds and services to make this playground happen. You may recall our recent attempt to win the Pepsi Refresh Grant funds, and how much amazing support was given to the project. We're grateful for that support, because the effort to win the grant really kicked off our local fundraising efforts with a bang. Now that we've begun the local fundraising process with businesses and organizations, the grants and donations are beginning to accumulate. It's time for us to kick off the public component of the fundraising effort.

The 1st Annual Sunshine Project 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday May 7th, 2011 at the East Bank of Grand Lake St. Marys. Last year, the Sunshine Project Committee and many supporters ran/walked at the Snap Fitness 5K Run in May. That run raised money for the Sunshine Project and was such a success, Snap Fitness in St. Marys offered to partner with us for a 5K Run each year to benefit the project. This year, proceeds will go to the Sunshine Playground. WCSM will be on site that morning with a live radio broadcast, and prizes will be given for the top finishers in the run. Benson and Zena the Newfoundland therapy service dogs will be on hand giving kisses and providing smiles. I'm inviting you to come run or walk with me and help these special kids and their families! If you don't wish to run, come support the runners, bring a donation, and help make dreams come true for special needs kids all over west central Ohio and East central Indiana. I plan to run/walk (more walk than run, lol) so if you'd like, you can sponsor me! I'll see you there!

With my position in the chamber of commerce, I'm blessed to have the opportunity to be a member of some wonderful service clubs. Last month at the NB-NK Rotary Club, Abby Balster (Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Van Wert, Mercer and Auglaize Counties) came to speak about the program. This afternoon she visited our Minster Service Club meeting. BBBS plays an important role in the lives of many youngsters in our area, and their's is an important story. Here's my article from her visit to the Rotary Club.

Big Brothers Big Sisters visits NB-NK Rotary

Abby Balster, Executive Director with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Mercer, Auglaize & Van Wert Counties visited the New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Club to discuss BBBS and the various programs they offer. The BBBS mission is “to make a positive difference in the lives of children by promoting their self-esteem, expanding their awareness of life’s opportunities, and providing them with guidance and support through long term one to one mentors with caring adult volunteers.” “We have 152 matches currently in all three counties,” said Balster. “Unfortunately we have 60 kids on our waiting list to be matched in our one on one program. All of the kids (94) in our after school program have been matched. It costs about $600 per year to match an adult with a child.”

Balster explained that BBBS in a non-profit organization that began in 1904 and has become the largest mentoring organization with over 255,000 matches in 2008.BBBS has been serving children in Mercer and Auglaize for over 20 years, and in Van Wert County for over 5 years. Their largest fundraiser each year is the Bowl for Kids event which raised over $20,000.00 last year. “A recent study shows that 52% of our “littles” are less likely to skip school, 46% are less likely to use drugs, 27% are less likely to use alcohol, and 75% of the “littles” said they learned right from wrong from their big,” said Balster. “We have four programs that help accomplish these goals, one on one matches, After School Buddies, the Supper Club, and AmachiOhio program.”

The One on one program matches an adult “big” with a child “little” for 3-4 visits per month. “We ask the bigs to provide some sort of enrichment activities,” said Balster. She explained that the process for becoming a volunteer includes an application, referrals and an extensive interview process. Once the new volunteers complete their BBBS orientation, BBBS runs a local and national background and driving check, prior to performing a home assessment with the volunteer. “We do a matching recommendation sheet once the process is complete,” said Balster. “This enables us to match the volunteer with a child that fits them well, based on interests and needs.”

BBBS interviews and visits potential “littles” and their parents to understand the child’s family situation, the child’s needs, and what the child wants their big to be like. “One of my favorite stories involves an 8 year match between a big sister and little sister,” said Balster. “When the younger brother of the “little” was finally eligible to be a part of the BBBS program, we asked him what he wanted his big to be like. He said “I want my big to be just like my sister’s big because she’s fun and cool.”

The after school program matches elementary students with high school students for one and a half hours after school while mom and dad are at work. The students finish their homework, participate in some physical activity and also do some sort of enrichment activity or crafts. The supper club kids meet with adult volunteer for supper twice per month.

The AmachiOhio program is a more specialized matching program for at-risk children. Amachi is a Nigerian word meaning “Who knows what God has brought us through this child?” Children qualify for this program if they have a parent incarcerated at the federal or state level. Over 80% of incarcerated people are parents, which makes this a very important program. Ohio spent over 1 billion dollars on their prisons in 2010 and has the highest incarceration rates in the country.

Volunteers can provide a positive influence in the lives of local children who find themselves in a difficult situation. Volunteering to mentor a child in need gives that child a clean slate and a fresh start in life. “If you’d prefer not to volunteer, talk about BBBS to your friends and maybe one of them might consider becoming a volunteer,” said Balster. Abby reported that as of now, there are 55 "littles" on the waiting list for their "bigs." She also reported that the Federal government has recently decided to cut funding for the AmachiOhio program two years before the grant was to run out. Civil War buffs, check this out!!

Guest blogger Tom Thompson of Lima will be presenting a program on the Civil War on Tuesday evening April 12th, at 7pm in the upstairs meeting room of the Miami and Erie Canal Visitor's Center. Here's a preview from Mr. Thompson:

"My interest in the Civil War was inspired by my 7th & 8th grade teacher Bill Hatfield, from Waynesfield. Bill loved the history of the war, and took every opportunity to tell relevant stories about it. One of his favorites (and by transfer – one of mine) was about the time when he drove his aged uncle to the reunion of the Gettysburg Battle…I think that was in 1938 for the 75th commemoration. President Roosevelt attended that year.

There were several Ohio Infantry Units present at the original battle, and Bill’s uncle was in one of those. It always made the hair on the back of my neck stand up when Bill would tell about his uncle at the reunion taking up his exact position behind a stone wall, and pointing his cane like a rifle toward the enemy position and saying, “and thar they come”.

From that introduction, I always had a desire to visit Gettysburg. When I became an adult and could drive on my own, the Gettysburg Battlefield was one of my first vacation destinations. Other Civil War sites beckoned me, and over the years I visited many of them. My interesting “hobby” became more of a passion when one of the costumed guides at Appomattox suggested that I might enjoy reading his favorite book, “The Killer Angels”.

Within the last ten years, I joined the Western Ohio Civil War Roundtable in Celina, and have enjoyed the association with many like minded individuals. I have served as program chairman since 2007.
I have no formal education or training in history beyond my diploma at Roundhead High School. I share my interest in Civil War sites with my wife Linda. Family vacations frequently included visits to sites with a Civil War connection. We always tried to impart an interest in the war to our two boys Jonathon and David.

My talk on April 12 will be an overview of the War. We’ll examine the five “W’s” of the war. More than 10,000 volumes have been written about the war, we’ll not get very deep into it in a brief presentation on the 150th anniversary of its outbreak."

Each month, I'm afforded the opportunity to write an article for The Evening Leader and the Community Post on behalf of your chamber of commerce. The article for march follows...

“Collaboration is the Mission”

One of the most valuable characteristics of our Chamber of Commerce is our ability to bring folks together in partnerships and collaborations. With all of the “connective technology” available to us these days via smart phones, the internet, and social media, why does it seem as if we’re out there “working in a phone booth” at times? These technological advances are important for sure, and they have definitely increased the pace of our lives and our ability to multi-task and accomplish more. However, I believe they are taking a toll on our ability to effectively communicate face to face. We’re slowly losing the art of conversation and collaboration, and that’s something I don’t think we can afford to lose, especially in today’s economic climate. Here is an example of what can be accomplished when you put people together in a room, with a purpose.

I recently had the privilege of participating in the 1st Annual Regional Economic Summit at the Wright State University Lake Campus. The purpose of this event was to bring folks together from around our region to discuss economic development and how higher education can play a role in improving our region. The four-hour event began with a keynote address from WSU President Dr. David Hopkins, who said “It is one thing to come together at these tables with diverse ideas and discussion, but it means nothing if we take no action on those ideas.” Dr. Hopkins clearly defined the purpose of the Regional Summit with that statement. It takes people coming together to affect positive change. Over 130 folks from public service and government, private enterprise, community service organizations, and the media participated in the roundtable discussions that followed Dr. Hopkins and the four presentations that highlighted the collaborative role WSU Lake Campus serves within our region.

The energy I felt in the room as I sat and listened to the presentations and participated in the table discussion, was evidence of the power of real collaboration. Here are four projects that feature partnerships formed by very diverse entities. They each have a distinct economic, cultural, and educational impact on our communities:

1.) The partnership between the WSU Business Enterprise Center and Crown Equipment Corporation, Cooper Farms and other local employers to enhance the quality of their workforces;

2.) The Grand Lake Restoration project;

3.) The partnership between WSU and Marion Local Schools to start an Agriculture Education program in their school district;

4.) The partnership between the Grand Lake Law Enforcement Academy and area law enforcement agencies to provide state certified training for law enforcement and corrections officers.

Given these four examples, it’s easy to see how much can be accomplished when people come together for a common purpose.

The synergies created when groups combine diverse resources cannot be adequately measured at face value. Consider how many students in the middle of Ohio’s leading agricultural region will benefit from the Agricultural Education program at Marion Local High School. How many will now be better equipped to work in their local agricultural economy after they finish school? Imagine the synergy that might be created when those students combine their talents and resources with the folks working to restore Grand Lake St. Marys, and they figure out how to pull the vital nutrients from the material at the bottom of the lake and the manure generated on local farms. Consider the economic benefits that could be realized!

Many opportunities and ideas for economic development surfaced during the roundtable discussions. We heard a great deal about job creation, workforce development, the local need for employees that work in the areas of health care, skilled trades and cross-functional engineers. I am confident that at some point in the future, some of these opportunities will turn into collaborative projects that will benefit our region. Jim Zehringer, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture shared an eye-opening statistic during his keynote address at the end of the event. “Higher education needs to be closer to business,” said Zehringer. “There are 80,000 job vacancies in Ohio because we are not producing workers with the skills needed by Ohio companies.” I’ve seen this illustrated here locally, having spoken with employers who tell me they cannot find skilled trades workers in our local employment pool, and that this issue has become a big concern for them. The energy I felt in the room will no doubt give rise to some exciting partnerships that will be on display at next year’s Regional Summit.

I am proud of how our Chamber of Commerce serves the community by helping to bring folks together for a common goal. Our mission statement is an example of the need for real collaboration: “The mission of the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce is to foster cooperation within the communities of Minster, New Bremen and New Knoxville - actively working to strengthen and promote the growth of our businesses, support our citizens through local activities, and enhance the quality of life in each community.” Our tag line sums it all up: “Joining together to do what none of us could do alone.”

Introducing: The Minster Civic Association and Trupointe Cooperative

I had the pleasure of attending the March meeting of the Minster Civic Association Tuesday evening, March 29th. I’ve been a member of this wonderful community service group for a little over a year now, and I can tell you that these folks take their business and their community service seriously. We meet monthly to discuss service opportunities and business over the legendary fried chicken baskets at the historic Wooden Shoe Inn in downtown Minster. This month’s meeting included an informative report from the Minster Schools regarding the upcoming levy, and an excellent presentation by the Minster Boy Scout Troop 44. Minster Troop 44 is the largest Scout troop in the entire Black Swamp Council (covering 13 counties in NW Ohio). They’ve got an impressive history dating back to the mid-1940’s, and since its inception, the Troop has produced 51 Eagle Scouts. The Civic Association voted to once again re-charter Scout Troop 44.

One of the unique features of the Minster Civic Association is the meeting format itself. Most monthly meetings include an off-site tour of a Minster business, prior to the club business meeting at the Wooden Shoe. This evening, several members met at the Trupointe Cooperative facility in Minster. Trupointe CEO Larry Hammond, site manager Neil Wiedeman, and several staff members conducted a facility tour and Mr. Hammond gave a presentation on the Trupointe Cooperative business. Hammond began his presentation with some eye opening statistics: In 1930, 1 farmer produced enough food to feed 10 people. Today’s farmer can feed 155 people. In 1930, the agriculture (Ag) industry employed 22% of working Americans. Today, the Ag industry employs just 2%. By 2050, it is predicted that the human population will increase by 50%. In order to keep up with that pace of population growth, farmers will need to increase their production by 70%. The challenge is clear: our population is growing, but no one is making any more farm ground. “Our cooperative system must position itself to effectively serve an increasingly sophisticated and demanding producer-customer base,” said Hammond.

Trupointe, headquartered in Piqua, is owned by the farmer-customers they serve, making it a true cooperative organization. Last year, Trupointe gave over $6,900,000.00 of their profits back to their customer-owners (farmer-producers). Trupointe’s 500+ employees operate 50 facilities from the Fort Wayne, IN area down through western Ohio to the Ohio River. The Trupointe facility in Minster purchases corn, beans and wheat for distribution as feed and (corn) for use in the production of Ethanol. In 2010, they took in 1,100,000 bushels of grain at the Minster site. With their silo capacity of 500,000 bushels, this means they filled and emptied their silos over two times during the season. Trupointe also operates a retail store/drive thru where customers can purchase anything from a diverse variety of animal feeds to ice melter, turf fertilizer products to Holland brand grills, and soon they will be able to refill propane cylinders. Hammond emphasized the fact the Trupointe made over $400,000.00 in capital improvements to the Minster facility in 2010. “I want to keep our facilities nice,” said Hammond. “We need to look like a business that’s going to be there.” The upgrades included re-configuring the physical plant to eliminate traffic congestion at the weigh scales, and the development of a site to offer propane cylinder refill services.

Hammond reported that Trupointe projects $616,000,000.00 in sales and a net income of $13,000,000.00 in 2011. Trupointe supplies their 10,000+ customers with 300,000 tons of fertilizer; 50,000,000 bushels of grain (bought and marketed); 300,000 tons of feed; 15,000,000 gallons of fuel delivered; $5,000,000 in turf management sales and services; and $5,000,000 in farm and retail store sales. “Our co-op is owned by over 4,500 farmer-customers and we’re governed by a 10 member board of directors,” said Hammond. “When we can put 50,000,000 bushels of grain on the market for our farmers, we can create overseas relationships to market and sell grain for them. One of the reasons we put this (co-op) together was to manage the weather.” Hammond explained that by having a large number of farmer-customers spread across a larger area, they are less likely to be negatively impacted by local and regional weather events.

The benefits of being an owner-member-customer of a co-operative like Trupointe are numerous for the local farmer. Trupointe provides a global market for the commodities produced on local farms here in Auglaize County. The unique feature of the co-op business model is that the co-operative re-invests a significant amount of money back into its farmer-customers. Many of the large multi-national agri-businesses do not provide a significant re-investment for their customers like the co-op does. The Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce is proud to have organizations like the Minster Civic Association and Trupointe Cooperative, Inc. as members. They are fine examples of what can happen when people come together for a common purpose that can benefit many folks beyond their organizations.

Senate Bill 5 update

As a member of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, we receive updates on legislative action in Columbus. Here is a summary of Senate Bill 5 as it is being voted on today in the Ohio House of Representatives:

Update: Public Sector Collective Bargaining Reform

Senate Bill 5 – A Snapshot

Senate Bill 5 allows all public employees except management to collectively bargain on wages, hours, terms and conditions of their employment. No salaries or benefits are cut and current contracts would continue until the end of their term. Public employees would be required to pay at least 15 percent of the cost of their health care coverage. Employees would also be required to pay their share of their retirement plan and could not negotiate to have their employer pay all or a portion of their share. Senate Bill 5 eliminates binding arbitration for law enforcement and fire fighters and prohibits public employees from striking.

The Ohio House Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee recommended an amended version of Senate Bill 5 today for passage by the full House. Some of the major changes include:

“Merit” based pay increases are changed to “performance” based pay increases.

Performance-based pay for police cannot be based on number of citations issued.

A specific framework for performance-based pay for teachers is included.

Police, fire, corrections officers and nurses will be allowed to bargain for safety equipment.

The elimination of jail time for illegal strikes is clarified.

Language prohibiting union members from talking to their elected officials while negotiations are occurring is removed.

Public employers would not be required to deduct money for PAC contributions from a union member’s payroll check unless the member opts in.

Requiring employees who do not join the union to pay a “fair share” toward union dues is eliminated.

A new Commission on Excellence in Public Service is created with appointments made by the Director of Administrative Services in consultation with public employee unions and public employers.

The process for resolving disputes includes legislative approval of either management’s or the union’s last best offer. If new revenue is needed to meet the terms of the last best offer selected, it can be subject to a voter referendum. The voters would choose between the last best offer made by management or the union.

The Ohio House is expected to vote on the amended bill on Wednesday, March 30 and the Senate will vote to concur with the House amendments either on Wednesday, March 30 or Thursday, March 31.

Seven Reasons EVERY Business and Non-profit Organization Should Be A Member of Their Local Chamber of Commerce In A Challenging Economy.

In a world loaded with marketing options and information overload I’m often asked by new and existing business owners for a simple, inexpensive way to increase their local visibility and marketing efforts to produce more opportunities and sales. Without a doubt, I always ask a stunningly simple question, Are you a member of your local chamber of commerce? I get one of three answers:

1. Yes

2. No, but tell me more

3. We used to be a member

Now I know every person has opinions but I’d like you to take a moment to read this brief article to discover seven reasons why I strongly feel that every business and non-profit organization should be a member of their local chamber regardless of the size of their organization, marketing budget, years in business, or even if they’ve heard or possibly had a negative chamber experience in the past. In light of the current challenges in the economy, this article is even more relevant than when I first wrote it two-years ago.

1. Visibility. Yes, you’ve heard it said time and time again, that out of sight means out of mind. This is not a smart strategy for any business, especially when times are good. A market can change quickly. As Jim Collins says, good is the enemy of great. This is a great statement, but I’d like to add to it as it relates to marketing. While good is the enemy of great, complacency and short term thinking is the enemy of sustained marketing breakthroughs.

Let’s look at a real world example of chamber complacency in action. Having worked with hundreds of chambers throughout North America, I’m simply baffled that within many communities how few real estate agents and automotive sales reps are either non-existent or barely active within their local chamber. In these two highly competitive and crowded markets you’d think these folks would do anything to stand out from the competition and fully leverage the chamber to get an edge. Nope. It’s as if they have no idea the local chamber exists and how it can benefit their business.

2. Access. Unless you’re crazy or like consistent rejection, no one enjoys making cold calls all day long. It’s a painful, tedious process that often wastes far too much time and mentally drains even the most upbeat and friendly person after a while. When you join a chamber and actively get involved you’ll discover that meeting prospects who may have an interest or who can refer you to key contacts you’re trying to reach, is a huge benefit of membership. From being on committees, serving as an ambassador, or attending specific events where prospects are likely to be, you’ll find yourself in situations where you can identify and meet decision makers face-to-face versus making cold calls.

3. Ongoing training and education. Unless you have the luxury of a training budget or can afford to bring in local, regional or nationally known experts on different topics, I firmly believe that there’s no other organization in America that delivers timely programs at such an affordable price as the local or regional chamber of commerce. By spreading costs among fellow members through registration fees and sponsorships, members can stay updated, informed and educated at a bargain price.

4. Networking. From seminars, leads groups, luncheons to business expos and various business and community committees, there’s absolutely no excuse for not being able to meet new contacts, referrals and people who can help you with ideas and additional ways to grow your business.

The old adage, out of sight, out of mind, is so true when it relates to networking. The chamber gives your several different venues to meet new people. My entire career I’ve utilized the power of networking in my home chamber’s ranging from serving as co-chair of the ambassador league to sponsoring and speaking at different events. The positive outcomes on the bottom line and great people I’ve met have been great. In addition, doing business with fellow member who offer wonderful products, services, and ideas has also been a big plus.

5. Low cost advertising opportunities. As far as visibility at the local level, a chamber offers a wide range of affordable advertising options and sponsorship packages for just about every business or non-profit, regardless of how big or small their budget may be. I’ve bought and sold traditional media and I can tell you it’s not cheap. For the price of a few ads within a major media outlet, you can often sponsor an entire program with the chamber, give a short commercial about your company, meet new prospects and follow up with the list of attendees who may have a need for your offering. This is a wonderful way to hold your marketing dollars accountable and see them working hard right before your eyes.

A common area to get low cost or free advertising is submitting updates or news briefs for possible inclusion within the chamber “Member News’ section of the newsletter or eletter. Amazingly, a lot of members do not take advantage of this wonderful free marketing opportunity provided with their membership. The chamber is always on the lookout for member related news. I make it a goal to get over a small news update or announcement at least every two to three months to my local chambers because I know many times it will get printed and read by key people in the business community.

6. Advocacy. A foolish belief among large companies, especially national retail outlets, is that they’re too big or not local enough to care about getting involved or joining their local chamber of commerce. A few things they should think about: Are their employees and customers local? Are taxes and school systems important to finding and retaining a high quality work force? These are key areas that the chamber researches, lobbies and routinely discusses with local and regional government units, politicians and the media to keep people up to date on central issues of importance pertaining to their membership and the community.

What happens to your local employees and customers does have an impact on your business even if you’re a national chain. In addition, missing out on networking, sponsorship and other business building news and benefits, I think it looks incredibly tacky if four or five local businesses are active in the chamber and a national firm in the same market area won’t even join. In my mind this sends an incongruent message to the market when the national company claims to be ‘a good corporate citizen’ but they won’t join and get involved with their local chamber of commerce.

7. Money saving discounts. If you fully leverage the cost saving discounts ranging from health insurance, office supplies, to discounted phone service to other items your business currently uses or will need, it’s not uncommon for a small business to easily find enough savings in the first 30-60 days upon joining with endorsed providers or member to member discounts to recoup most, if not all of their membership dues. Being a small business owner, I can attest to the fact that being a member of the chamber and shopping around for discounts and services available makes joining achievable for any company regardless of how limited their marketing budget may be.

Well, there you have it! Seven great reasons to join or get more involved and fully leverage the benefits that your home town or regional chamber of commerce can provide your business or organization.

We’re bringing the promotional refrigerator magnet program “home” to the Golden Triangle. Rather than invest your marketing dollars in an out-of-town business, consider investing in your local Chamber of Commerce. Chamber member Shelly Bruns at RB Advertising has put together an excellent package for the production of refrigerator magnets.

To make the magnets more “user-friendly” and highlight important village phone numbers, RB Advertising has made each ad space the same easy-to-read large size (1 ½” X 1 1/8”). This design allows for only 14 full color ads on the 8 ½ X 5 ½” magnet. However, this layout will really help your business stand out. Ads cost $200 each*, and we’ll produce and distribute 2,500 magnets in and around the Golden Triangle.

Our intention is to run this program every other year, so your marketing investment is out there for two years. I plan to sign up advertisers on a first-come, first-serve basis. New Bremen Massage Clinic moves to new location!

The folks at the New Bremen Massage Clinic have a new place to call home. They've moved to 103 W. Monroe St. in downtown New Bremen, between the New Bremen Coffee Co. and Books, and La Piazza New Bremen. With their new clinic, they have 2 treatment rooms, and a large extra room that we will use for Yoga classes (with Kim Oen of New Bremen as instructor), and Spa parties.

The Chamber of Commerce will offically welcome the New Bremen Massage Clinic downtown at their grand opening event on Saturday April 2nd at 9:00 am with a ribbon cutting. They are looking forward to serving all of their current clients, and new clients from their new location!

On Tuesday evening April 5th at 7:00 pm, The New Bremen Coffee Co. and Books will host their annual Poetry Slam. Each participant should have two prepared poems for competition. Adults must have their own work. Students may choose to read their own poem or another's work. Students may also enter as a team. Each competitor will be judged on their performance with top performers being called back to read a second poem. The deadline to enter is March 31, 2011. The cost to enter is $1, gift certificates will be awarded to the winners.

The canal gently spills its banks in New Bremen!

Here are some images from the flooding along the Miami and Erie Canal in downtown New Bremen. Water softly flowed over the western bank in places from Plum St. to just south of the Miami and Erie canal Visitor's Center. The water that escaped the canal flowed into the swale that runs parallel along the canal through downtown. Water flowing through the recently retiled and improved culverts washed over the bridge leading to the rear of the Visitors Center, washing out a portion of the bridge deck and limiting access to the building.

Water in the basin at Lock Two North was actually gently running over the basin wall for a time, draining through the parking lot north of the lock. The village was forced to barricade portions of Plum and Main Sts. in town to keep folks from becoming stuck in the high water. By 11 am, much of the water has receded to more manageable levels.

The work performed along the canal in recent years to improve drainage and prevent the canal bank from eroding to the point of washing out no doubt saved several homes in town from severe flood damage. At least that is how it appeared to me this morning.

The answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind

Well, we're not really going to sing a Bob Dylan tune here or anything, but I thought it an appropriate lead in for the topic of wind energy. There is a debate afoot regarding the wind turbine issue here in west central Ohio. There are many components to this debate that need explanation so everyone can understand what's at stake.

We believe that the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce has an obligation to do our part in helping to keep the public informed when issues present themselves in our communities. To that end, we're happy to announce that there is a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday February 23rd at the Knights of Columbus in Minster, OH at 7:30 pm. This informational meeting will address several issues concerning the potential of wind turbines coming to west central Ohio.

Whether you "have a dog in the fight" or simply want to know what issues are out there with the wind turbines, this meeting is your chance to become informed.

A snowy Saturday at the Locks!

I know that plenty of kids around town were bummed out when the Lockkeeper's House went up. We trashed their sledding hill. Here's proof positive that there's life after the LKH even for a 9 yr old and his buddies! My son and his friends are out there racing down the icy-snow covered hillside, into the St Marys river headwaters behind downtown. So far, no injuries, jsut lots of laughs, smiles and red faces! We've had kids outside all week, with the recent ice and snowfall. This canal bank has been a place for kids to come sledding for years, and I am really glad to see that continue!

"Battle of the Badges"

On Saturday March 5th, 2011 several volunteers from the New Bremen Volunteer Fire Department will participate in the annual "Battle of the Badges." You can help them raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by "sponsoring" them in the competition.

What is Battle of the Badges?

It’s an exhilarating stair-climbing and fundraising competition that raises money and awareness for the work of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Hundreds of firefighters, EMS workers and law enforcement officers form two-person or four-person relays teams and make a chip-timed accent up 40 flights of stairs at the Rhodes State Office Tower in downtown Columbus. Ohio. The toughest competitors tackle all 40 flights on their own.

How can law enforcement officers realistically “compete” against firefighters who climb wearing more than 50 pounds of gear?

Law enforcement officers can’t realistically compete against firefighters in this climbing competition because it's like comparing apples to oranges. Firefighters will be climbing in full turnout gear that weighs over 50 pounds, while law enforcement officers will climb with a weighted vest that weighs considerably less. The climbing competition is more “intra-departmental.”

For example, law enforcement officers from one department can compete against law enforcement officers from another department. Just as firefighters from one station can compete against firefighters from another station. However, fundraising is one sure way that law enforcement officers can compete against firefighters during “Battle of the Badges” fundraising. We hope this competition is taken as seriously as the physical competition.

What kind of recognition and prizes will the winners get?

The fastest solo climbers (one firefighter, one law enforcement officer) will be presented with gold medals by Arnold Schwarzenegger during a private luncheon at the Arnold Sports Festival (a framed photo of themselves next to Arnold will be provided after the event).

Second and third place solo climbers in each division will be awarded silver and bronze medals. Plaques will be presented to the fastest two-person and four-person relay teams in the fire and law divisions.

It is ironic that the January "Chamber Voice" talks about the importance of service. (to read it, visit the chamber website at www.auglaize.org and click "chamber voice") Sadly ironic in fact, since we've just lost a good friend and "captain of service" Mr. Frank C. Murray of St. Marys. Earlier this afternoon, I stopped by Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys to pay my respects to the Murray family, for their tragic loss. As a fellow Rotarian, a CVB Board member, and representative of our three communities, I assured Mrs. Murray that many in the Golden Triangle would be praying for Frank and for his family.

While I only had occasion to meet Mr. Murray briefly in passing just twice, I knew when I met him he was a fellow I'd want to get to know. I now regret the fact that I never seized the opportunity to get to know Frank. From what I've seen and heard, I know that Frank gave of himself at every turn, and was a champion for not only the City of St. Marys, but he was a champion for the region, for Rotary and for folks all over who needed a champion. Whether it be his service to our country in Vietnam, his 25+ years serving the St. Marys Chamber of Commerce, his many years of service to the St. Marys Rotary, District Rotary and Rotary International, Frank obviously understood what it is to be of service to others. I only hope I can live up to his example of service in my life.

To the Murray family, his close friends, the St Marys Rotary and the residents of St Marys, I pray that you find comfort and peace during this sad time. Cling to the memory of all that Mr. Murray accomplished in his time among us, and be grateful to have known him or to have been helped by him. Pass along his legacy of service above self in all you do!

The annual State of the Villages Breakfast is a sell out once again! We've got over 100 folks RVSP'd for this year's event. Mayors Leffel (New Knoxville), Kitzmiller (Minster), and Pape (New Bremen) will give their "State of the Villages" speeches at the New Knoxville American Legion on Thursday Jan 27th, 7:30 am. This annual event has come to be appreciated as an excellent networking opportunity, and a great way to learn what's taking place within the the villages that make up the "Golden Triangle" of Southwestern Auglaize County.

The event will also feature brief reports from several of our State of Ohio elected officials including Senator Keith Faber, Representative John Adams, and newly appointed State Senator Cliff Hite. Cory Noonan will present a report on behalf of US 4th District Congressman Jim Jordan. A wonderful breakfast will be provided by the Main Street Station restaurant in New Knoxville. NK Telco will be on hand to record the proceedings, to be broadcast on NK Telco channel 3. The event will be shown on Friday January 28, 2011 at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, and on Saturday January 29, 2011 at 4:00 pm.

Back in November 2010, Marissa Lundstrom (owner of Locust Street Consulting) gave an excellent presentation on the basics of Social Media. Following a general overview of social media, Ms. Lundstrom demonstrated how to set up a facebook account, and discussed various features of facebook. Much of the discussion centered around the use of faceboook to develop and promote small business. Many in attendance at the Chamber Lecture Series event own and/or operate small businesses, and found the session to be very valuable.

"Social Media 2.0" will offer several ideas and strategies for the use of social media to develop, grow and market your business. An important book signing in New Bremen!

"St. Marys resident Denny Seewer was just 25-years-old when he was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a bone cancer most common in younger people. His doctor told him and his wife Theresa there was nothing he could do for him and sent him home to enjoy his 23 month old son while he could. Thirty-five years later, Seewer is healthy and enjoying his grandchildren.

Seewer's story is one of 27 people nationwide who tell their stories in the new book, "From Incurable to Incredible: Cancer Survivors Who Beat the Odds."

The book is compiled and written by Tami Boehmer, wife of St. Marys native Mike Boehmer. Boehmer will appear for a book signing from 11am to 1pm Jan 15 at New Bremen Coffee and Books."

If you or your family has been touched by cancer, it will be worth the trip to New Bremen to meet this auther and hear these inspiring stories!

A beautiful day for a walk along the towpath on the Miami and Erie Canal!

My wife Tiz (black coat), our son Ian (yellow coat), our dog Cosmo, and I made the trek north to Lock Two from the Lockkeeper's House this afternoon and I have to say that it was glorious! We were blessed with a perfect, sunny crisp day, with a dash of snow to kick around and it was really peaceful out there.

Back at the Lockkeeper's House, we've registered over 100 hikers, walkers, and runners so far, and folks are still coming in. I've met all sorts of wonderful adults of all ages, kids, and even some really sweet dogs! Folks are upstairs enjoying hot coffee, cocoa, sookies and bottled water, telling tales of their travels along the canal.

A hearty thanks goes to the Miami and Erie Canal Corridor Association (MECCA), especially Neal and Allison Brady, Tom and Diane Fledderjohann for putting the event together! We would also like to thank the New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Club for providing the refreshments, and Anne Larger and the Grand Lake Health System for including our event in their Road to Fitness Challenge.

Happy 2011 from the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce! We're back in full swing here at the chamber getting ready for a few exciting upcoming events.

This weekend (Sunday Jan 9) we help to host the Lockkeeper's Winter Canal Hike with Miami and Erie Canal Corridor Association (MECCA) and the NB NK Rotary Club. Registration for the hike runs from 1-3 pm and we'll be in the Lockkeepers House until 4pm with refreshments and so forth. Folks can hike in from Minster or from the Kuenning Dicke Natural Area to the LKH then return, or hike from the LKH in either direction. Either way a round trip is roughly 5K. The event is free, and is also a part of the Grand Lake Health System "Road to Fitness Challenge."

Coming up on Thursday January 27th, it's the Annual State of the Villages Breakfast at the American Legion in New Knoxville. The event begins at 7:30 am with a breakfast catered by Main Street Station in New Knoxville. We'll hear brief reports from Rep. John Adams (R) Dist 78, Senator Keith Faber (R) Dist 12, Cliff Hite (R) Dist 76 and Cory Noonan from US 4th Dist. Congressman Jim Jordan's (R) office in Lima. The featured speakers for the morning are Keith Leffel (Mayor NK), Dennis Kitzmiller (Mayor Min) & Jeff Pape (Mayor NB). The event typiclal wraps up around 9:15. RSVP is required, call the chamber office at (419) 629-0313. The cost is $10 per attendee.

Plans are coming together for the 2nd Annual Spring Fever Weekend. Area merchants and shops will offer informative workshops, seminars and presentations in their businesses. Keep an eye on the chamber website for more details on Spring Fever Weekend, March 5-6, 2011.

2011 looks to be a busy year for the Chamber Lecture Series, with several new programs in the planning stages. Keep checking back here and on the chamber website for details on Chamber Lecture Series events.

Road to Fitness

The Grand Lake Health System is once again rolling out their annual Road to Fitness Challenge. I will post the schedule on the chamber website so you can get a copy if you're interested in participating. I know I am giving it some serious thought. It might make a fun way to keep track of fitness activities, get in shape and maybe even win a prize in the process.

Basically it goes like this:

There are several "official" Road to Fitness events you can participate in. For each RTF event you participate in, you receive points. The more points you accumulate, the more chances you have to win a prize. Of course, the true prizes here are the wellness and fitness that come with walking, running and bike riding.

'tis the season! Pam and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry and Joyous Christmas, and a safe, prosperous New Year in 2011.

We've had a wonderful year here at the Chamber, with lots of new programs and many changes along the way. Membership revenue dipped a bit in 2010, mostly due to the economy but, we brought in 32 new members this year, and we're very proud of that. The Chamber of Commerce itself attracts these new members based on the strength of our organization and the various opportunities afforded by chamber membership. We're truly only as strong and dynamic as our individual members! The fact that in a challenging economy, we can grow our membership base by over 10% surely says a lot about our organization.

The chamber office relocated this year to the Lockkeeper's House, resulting in a very nice place for us to do business. Having access to the upstairs meeting room in the LKH has presented us with the opportunity to really expand our program offerings through the Chamber Lecture Series. We've hosted the folks from WSU Lake Campus, the Grand Lake Restoration group, the Ohio Dept of Development, Congressman Jim Jordan, the Heritage Trails Park District, Women in Business, Grand Lake Young Professionals, area County Commissioners, the Ohio Historical Society Director, and officials from ODNR, the Ohio Secretary of State's Office among others. Several chamber member organizations and businesses have taken advantage of the CLS to promote their business with lunch and learn meetings and sponsorships of CLS events. It's been a busy year where the Chamber Lecture Series is concerned, and we have plans for a busy 2011 as well.

If you're reading this, you know that the chamber has ventured into the world of social media with our Facebook page, this blog and a presence on Twitter. The aim is to increase the exposure of the entire chamber and its individual members through the use of social media. So far, we've definitely accomplished that. Look for additional marketing opportunities in 2011 with a new and improved chamber website and a major investment in new membership management software.

2010 also provided an opportunity to try some new programs, including the "R-n-R" Networking group for retailers and restaurant owners, the Spring Fever Weekend retail promotion, and the introduction of the Pulled Pork BBQ sandwich at the New Knoxville Independence Day Celebration. Both programs will return in 2011 with renewed energy and excitement!

All in all 2010 was an excellent year for your chamber of commerce. We ended up in a positive position financially, well ahead of 2009. The number of members increased, revenue will follow. Our program offerings expanded, we moved into a very nice new space at the LKH and we've "gone viral" online. Okay, maybe viral is a strong word, but our message is getting out there in a much wider, broader sense! We've added Janet Hall (Village of NK Fiscal Officer), Steve Gruber (Minster Machine), and Jason This (an attorney in NB) to our Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for 2011. We say thanks very much to Chris Fyock (Minster Bank, NB), and Jay Purdy (Community Insurance, Minster) for their three year service commitment to the Chamber of Commerce. The officers for 2011 are Janet Hall, Treasurer; Lisa Davidson (Topsy Turvy Toys, NB) Vice President, and Rob Albers (Minster Bank, Minster) President.

I've been announcing, press releasing, marketing and generally trumpeting from the hilltops about the WCSM Holiday Food Train drop box located in our office here at the chamber of commerce. So far, the response has been, shall we say... underwhelming!

Just so you know how easy this is... I'll tell you my story. I've been sitting here looking at this empty box since before Thanksgiving, growing more and more frustrated by the day over the lack of response. Then it occured to me, "Scott, where is the food you're intending to donate?" DUH! So, on my way to the office this morning, I visited Howell's IGA in New Bremen, bought some canned corn, tuna and several boxes of mac n cheese (brought me back to my college days lol). Including the twodonuts I bought for Pam and I, the balance came to $11.83. So, I spent all of $10.00 on a few staples and it took me 10 extra minutes out of my day. I then placed the bags in the drop box, and now we have some donated non-perishable food items! I only share this to tell you how simple it is, not because I think I am some wonderful philanthropist.

I encourage... No wait, I CHALLENGE you all to do the same. Spend $10 bucks on some non-perishable food items, and clean out your pantry for a couple tasty morsels, and bring them to the Lockkeeper's House for the Holiday Food Train. The donated items will go to Agape Food Pantry in St Marys, and the Call Food Pantry in Celina.

This afternoon, WCSM will be here broadcasting live from 4:30-5:30. Kathy Bayless with the Agape Food Pantry will be among the guests. Some of our sponsors will be here as well. So, stop in to say hello and drop off your donations this afternoon. The box will be here until the 17th, so don't wait! Let's make WCSM come empty this thing out every few days, for all the donated items!

Remeber, not everyone is employed this holiday season. More and more pressure is put on local food pantries to help those in need. So please, consider giving just a lilttle!

Julie Miller, Director of the Business Enterprize Center at the Wright State University Lake Campus will be on hand to discuss the BEC during the final Chamber Lecture Series event of the year on Tuesday Dec. 7th at 11:00 am in the upper meeting room of the Lockkeeper's House. Julie will talk about the SkillsTrac manufacturing training program, the MBA program at WSU and the many business courses offered through the BEC. Julie will also cover the "Starting Right" program offered through the BEC.

Alright folks, it's time! Get your mouses ready to start clicking! Voting begins tomorrow on the Pepsi Refresh Grant website: www.refresheverything.com for the New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary Sunshine park project. We're building a handicapped/special needs accessible playground at Bremenfest Park and we're in the running for a $250,000.00 grant from Pepsi. We NEED YOUR HELP to vote! Folks can vote daily on the website, on the Pepsi Refresh grant Facebook page AND via text message.

Please consider taking time to vote daily for our project. We'll impact the lives of children and families with special needs all over west central Ohio and east central Indiana. The park will be the only one of it's kind within about a 100 mile radius! When we win the grant money, we can begin building, since the $250,000.00 will cover the cost to build the park. So tell all your friends, send the word out to all of your facebook and twitter friends, and help us put a smiel on the faces of special needs children!

It's not often I find myself inspired to write two blog posts in one day but I feel so inspired today! I just returned from an exciting celebration in Minster! H.A Dorsten, Inc has qualified for, and has been awarded VPP approval from the US Department of Labor, OHSA for their successful completion of the Voluntary Protection Programs. H.A. Dorsten, Inc., General Contractors (Minster) is one of only 13 contractors in Ohio that has ever been awarded VPP approval. Business partners, company employees & management, subcontractors and even our State Representative came together to congratulate the company on their accomplishment.

From the OSHA site:

"The VPP recognize employers and workers in the private industry and federal agencies who have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for their respective industries. In VPP, management, labor, and OSHA work cooperatively and proactively to prevent fatalities, injuries, and illnesses through a system focused on: hazard prevention and control; worksite analysis; training; and management commitment and worker involvement. To participate, employers must submit an application to OSHA and undergo a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of safety and health professionals. Union support is required for applicants represented by a bargaining unit. VPP participants are re-evaluated every three to five years to remain in the programs. VPP participants are exempt from OSHA programmed inspections while they maintain their VPP status."

Congratulations to the employees and management at H.A Dorsten on this remarkable achievement. They've really set the standard for workplace safety with successful completion of VPP. As a result of this designation, H.A Dorsten will no doubt continue to lead the construction industry, building on their excellent reputation for quality and safety. This accomplishment speaks volumes about the type of people that make up our work force in west central Ohio, and we're very proud to count H.A Dorsten among our chamber of commerce members and supporters. During the ceremony, a representative from OSHA presented the company with a plaque and the VPP "Star Workplace" flag, and as a part of this afternoon's proceedings, District 78 State Representative John Adams (R) presented the company with a Commendation from the Ohio House of Representatives. Well done!

It's so important, especially at this time of year, that we consider those around us who might be struggling financially, emotionally, with the loss of a job, a loved one, or an illness. WCSM has kicked off their annual Holiday Food train, and the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce is fortunate to be a "stop" along the "route of giving."

Please consider dropping off non-perishable food items in the bin at the chamber office here in the Lockkeeper's House. The food items will be given to the Call Food Pantry in Celina and Agape Ministries in St. Marys. Many folks in our area are still suffering at the hands of a difficult economy, even though things are slowly improving. So, if you find yourself abundantly blessed this holiday season, please share in that blessing by helping us help those in need.

Take a visit to the SWAC Chamber website homepage and you'll notice a new link there: "Interactive SW Auglaize County Map." Click on the link and you'll be taken out to a seperate site that features an interactive map of our communities. The map features the ability to zoom in and out, and has locator pins for advertising businesses, very nifty! Also, folks who visit can download a .pdf version of te map itself to keep on their computer or email out to folks. This is a dynamite tool for visitors to our website, and a great marketing tool for th ebusinesses who chose to advertise on the interactive map.

German Family Christmas!

This is the big weekend! Fourteen local businesses will hold holiday open houses during this weekend. Merchants will feature various activities, specials, and promotions all throughout the weekend. The best advice I can give you here is to consult the Chamber of Commerce website www.auglaize.org and click on German Family Christmas under "events." On the German Family Chirstmas page you'll find a full listing of all the participating merchants and details about their open houses. There is a link to a printable .pdf version of the GFC map that also includes all the details about the weekend.

There are three special open house events I'd like to highlight: The YMCA Festival of Trees, the Holiday Bazaar and Christmas in the Village.

The YMCA 1st Annual Festival of Trees takes place at the South Branch of the Auglaize-Mercer Family YMCA all weekend. Businesses and private individuals have donated fully decorated trees, wreaths and crafts for sale at a weekend long silent auction. So, stop down there and take a stroll through the lobby of the Y, bid on your favorite decorated tree or wreath. Proceeds from the auction sales go into the Y Financial Assistance Fund.

The 1st Annual Holiday Bazaar takes place at the Lockkeeper's House in New Bremen Staurday from 10am until 3pm. The Holiday Bazaar features the Holy Redeemer Youth Group baked goods sale, and several home-based businesses/consultants available to consult for holiday gift giving and display their products. Stop over, grab some delicious holiday treats and browse around the displays, all in a festive holiday setting at the Lockkeeper's House. (note, the sidewalks are in, so entry to the building is much easier!)

Christmas in the Village is back again this year in a new location, the American Legion in New Knoxville! On Sunday from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, ten home-based businesses and consultants will be available to share their gift giving ideas and display their products and services. Admission is only $1, and while you're there enjoy refreshments and an opportunity to win prizes and a raffle!

Also on SUnday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, Santa will make a stop at Western Ohio True Value Hardware. He will be available for photos, so bring your digital camera or choose from a photo package available on-site.

While you're shopping, you can register for three gift packages donated by participating merchants. The drawing will be held next week, winners will be notified via telephone!

Festival of Trees!!

The Auglaize-Mercer Family YMCA South Branch is holding their first annual "Festival of Trees" during German Family Christmas, November 12, 13 and 14. Private individuals, organizations, and companies have donated decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, and craft items for silent auction throughout the weekend. Folks can come in, look at the items and bid on the display items all throughout the German Family Christmas weekend. All of the auction proceeds will go to the YMCA Financial Assistance Fund. Stop in and check out the beautifully decorated items! (see photo!)

Social Media a fad? Not so much!

Marissa Lundstrom, owner of Locust Street Consulting presented an excellent program on Social Media this morning at the Lockkeeper's House. Eleven interested persons participated in a session packed with questions and answers about social media in general and how it can be utilized in a business setting. Most of the presentation addressed how to get started with facebook and how to use facebook in a business setting. Our panel of small business owners/leaders (including Kelty Inman with VPP Inc; Rand Fisher with the Auglaize County United Way; Wes Farno a social media and political consultant and small business owner; and yours truly with the Chamber of Commerce) shared our experiences with social media, citing several real-world examples of how we are presently utilizing social media to grow and promote our respective businesses.

The attendees comprised an interesting cross-section of folks from non-profit organizations and for-profit businesses made up mostly of chamber members. It was interesting to note that there was a wide range of Social Media experience levels among the attendees, as well as a significant age range. Several lively conversations took place as Marissa led the group through her power point presentation, offering several specific examples of the business applications for facebook, often "backed-up" and punctuated by a brief statement or two from the panel throughout the two hour session.

Once the session concluded, several attendees remained behind to ask questions of Marissa and Kelty. This tells me that we probably need a few more sessions in a series dedicated to Social Media. We may have created more questions than were answered, due to the broad range of information available concerning social media.

New Kid in Town!

Another new business opens in New Bremen!
Justin Luedeke, the owner of Cardinal Landscape Management dropped by my office Friday to join the chamber and tell me about his new landscaping business. Cardinal Landscape Management handles residential and commercial landscaping, lawn mowing and snow removal in the winter. Justin clearly expressed his passion for excellence in landscape management (as evidenced by the photo!) while we chatted.

The voters of Auglaize County once again overwhelmingly gave their support to our seniors. I had the good fortune to be elected Chairman of the Auglaize County Council on Again renewal levy committee this year, what an experience! We got the word out through media, speaking engagements, good old grass roots efforts, and everyone's work paid off! I'd like to thank the committee, the ACCA board & staff, and their incredible director Chris Roby for their dedication to Auglaize County Seniors! It has been an honor working with all of you!

We want to thank the voters and property owners in Auglaize County for continuing to fund the operations of the ACCA. Without this levy and the funding it provide, we would no long be able to carry out the good works in support of our Auglaize County seniors. Most of all, I want to thank the seniors of Auglaize County for all they've done over the years to make our area such a wonderful place to live, work and play! I'm proud to call New Bremen and Auglaize County home!

German Family Christmas 2010

Preparations are under way in the Golden Triangle in advance of the annual German Family Christmas Holiday Open House weekend. The event is set to take place Friday November 12, Saturday November 13, and Sunday November 14 in Minster, New Knoxville and New Bremen. Local shops will offer special promotions, discounts and activities to kick off the holiday shopping season. The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a “Holiday Bazaar” in the Lockkeeper’s House from 10-3pm on Saturday. This special event will feature a bake sale, and several home-based businesses and consultants. Come tour the beautifully decorated Lockkeeper’s House as a part of your weekend! Sunday will feature the ever-popular New Knoxville “Christmas in the Village” from 1-4pm at the American Legion in New Knoxville. Ten home-based businesses and consultants will be on hand to demonstrate and sample their products and services. The Auglaize-Mercer Family YMCA will host their first annual Festival of Trees all weekend. Local businesses and organizations will donate decorated Christmas trees and wreaths which can be bid on in a silent auction. All the proceeds from the auction will benefit the YMCA.

Lock One Theater will offer two Saturday and Sunday matinees for the kids, so mom and dad can get some free time to shop! Show times are 2:30 and 4:45 pm both days, and the feature film is “Mega Minds.” The Bicycle Museum will be open from 11am until 2pm on Saturday. Sunday will also feature a special visitor from the North Pole!! Santa will visit Western Ohio True Value Hardware from 10am until 2pm, so bring the kids and your digital camera for photos!

"We Owe"

It's my belief that we owe. We owe our seniors as much love and support as we can give. Of course, you're wondering "what's this got to do with the chamber, the canal or the lockkeeper's house?" Well I'll tell you...

This November 2nd, we are obligated to exercise one of our most precious rights, our right to choose our own government, and make our voice heard on the issues. Yep, November 2nd is Election Day! There is an issue on the Auglaize County ballot that is near and dear to my heart and I'd like to ask you to indulge me and consider voting yes, in support of the Auglaize County Council on Aging renewal levy. It's really simple: the levy means no new taxes, no increase to what the property owners of Auglaize County have been paying over the past several years. But, the levy means that the ACCA can remain a vital service provider to the 8500+ seniors in Auglaize County for another 5 years.

You see, this levy provides 82% of the funding for the ACCA. Without the continued support this levy provides, there would simply be no more ACCA. Many of our seniors wish to remain in their homes, living independantly for as long as they can. We owe these folks this opportunity. They've raised us, taught us, governed us, loved us and given of themselves, that we might have better lives than they had growing up. We owe them this service.

Spend a few minutes reviewing all of the services they provide FREE OF CHARGE to our seniors, and you'll see why this levy is SO IMPORTANT. Well, I don't often do this (two posts in one day) but I just had to come back and share a great read I found via twitter on how big brands use Social Media to market themselves and connect with customers. I get "tweets" from Entrepreneur Magazine, and those little messages often contain links to some great business articles. This particular one really caught my eye: http://mashable.com/2010/10/26/social-media-engaged-brands/ Based on this article, I'd say there just might be something to this new world we call Social Media.

Often times, after reading those articles, I'll decide whether or not to "re-tweet" the article out to my small band of followers. And often times after re-tweeting something, I will get notice that my tweet has then been re-tweeted by someone. So you can clearly understand the viral power of social media as a marketing tool. To follow me on twitter is very simple. If you don't have a twitter account, go to www.twitter.com and get one, the account is free and easy as pie to set up. Then, search for "SWACChamberGuy" on twitter and follow along. You'll get all the latest and greatest news from the chamber, and some great blog posts and articles pertaining to various things of interest. Twitter may seem a little confusing at first, and some might wonder why bother, when you begin to get tweets about what folks ate for breakfast or what they wore to work. But when you reflect a moment on the number of folks you can reach with really great content (i.e. your stuff!), the mind boggles!

The Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce Lecture Series presents “Social Media Basics” on Tuesday November 9, at 10:30 am here in the upper meeting room of the Lockkeeper’s House. Marissa Lundstrom, owner of Locust Street Consulting will introduce attendees to the basics of social media, including how to set up a facebook account. Also a part of the session Ms. Lundstrom will lead a panel of local professionals in a discussion of how they are using social media in their organizations.

Annual Meeting Notes

The Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce held our annual meeting this past Tuesday. Executive Director Scott M. Frey reported on the "state of the chamber" and the luncheon event featured keynote Speaker LaYaughn M. Henry, PhD., Sr. VP Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Perfect Party Catering provided a wonderful lunch buffet for the 55 attendees. The newly renovated fellowship hall at Faith Alliance Church provided the ideal backdrop for the meeting.

Frey reported that 22 new members have joined the chamber since January 1, 2010, exceeding his goal of 20. Revenue was up 47% over last year, and expenses were also up, but only by about 22%. Net revenue to the chamber over the same period (1/1/09-9/30/09) increased by over $10,000.00. Frey noted that "we're pleased with the progress but we're behind budget as far as overall revenue is concerned." Frey noted several new developments within the chamber in 2010 including the use of social media, the move to the Lockkeeper's House, the development of the Chamber Lecture Series and the increase in networking opportunities for chamber members.

Dr. Henry gave a 60+ minute presentation on the state of the US economy. Henry's lack of political agenda shone very clearly and creating a highlevel of credibility. "I don't have a dog in the fight in Washington, I am neither a D or an R, I am a true I," said Henry. He explained that the economy is indeed growing and improving, heading in the right direction. However, the pace of that growth is what has folks concerned. The cause for the slow pace of growth and economic recovery is due in large part to consumer uncertainty. He explained that this uncertainty is manifested in five key areas: the high unemployment numbers; the concern that this recovery is unsustainable; the lack of consumer involvement in the economy; the fear of possible deflation (and that deflation is the real concern); and the credit crunch that continues to plague financial markets.

Henry made the point that unemployment will continue to be high for the next year to 18 months, and that will hamper a quick recovery. He did note that the credit markets are "beginning to thaw." The connection between high unemployment and consumer spending is obvious, and will continue to effect the growth of the US economy. The overall message taken from his presentation is that the Fed will continue to pursue strategies that will help the economy grow at a reasonable, sustainable rate. That may involve continuing to foster a favorable interest rate environment for the time being. His message was clear: "we're headed in the right direction, just not as quickly as folks would like."

Chamber Lecture Series: "Auglaize Outdoors- Naturally Speaking"

On Thursday October 14th at 7:00 pm in the upper meeting room at the Lockkeeper's House the Chamber Lecture Series welcomes Allison Brady, Executive Director of the Heritage Trails Park District to present her program "Auglaize Outdoors- Naturally Speaking."

"What prehistoric stories does our landscape have to tell? Before our ancestors came into this area, what did the land look like? How did people travel before the creation of modern transportation of canal, rail and road? Join Allison Brady, Director of the Heritage Trails Park District to learn about the natural history of Auglaize County.

Using maps, first person accounts, and her storytelling skills, Brady will weave together our natural history like you have never heard it before. Whether your people have been here for many generations or you are a recent arrival, Brady promises that everyone will learn something new about this land we call home."

This event is a part of the ongoing "Chamber Lecture Series" and is free and open to the public.

New kid in town

There is a new business, (and also a new chamber member, I believe) opening their doors this Saturday in New Bremen. Platinum Auto Group celebrates their Grand Opening from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm Saturday October 9th. They are located in the former Jim Bubeck dealership between Cardinal Express and Mesco Lighting on SR 66, just south of Amsterdam Rd.

Owners Steve and Dave heckman will welcome folks into their new business at 9:00 am with a ribbon cutting and the event will feature giveaways, free food and drinks. They'll have over 50 vehicles on-site, available for purchase. The public is welcome to stop out and tour the showroom, mechanic's shop and the offices.

So, if you have a bit of curiosity and a little time on Saturday, drop by Platinum Auto Group and offer Steve and Dave a warm welcome into our community!

There is a great event coming up on Sunday October 17th, from 12 noon until 4:00 pm along the Miami and Erie Canal in St Marys, the 41st Annual Walk with nature. Here are the details:

"The St. Marys Kiwanis and the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce along with the help of several other community partners invites everyone to enjoy the 41st Annual “Walk with Nature” on the Miami-Erie Canal Tow Path and the 2nd Annual “Fall Festival in Memorial Park”.

The “Walk with Nature” is a pleasant, level walk along the Tow Path of the Canal and can begin or end at several points. The length of the walk can be from 3 miles to as much as 18 miles. Buses are available for transport to and from starting and stopping points. The Tow Path extends north from St. Marys, Memorial Park to 40 acre pond and on to Lock 14 and also south from Memorial Park to State Route 219. Also, Grand Lake Health Systems invites you to get on the “Road to Fitness” and earn 10 points for the GLHS Fitness Challenge.

The “Fall Festival in Memorial Park” will feature:

• Entertainment at the Gazebo by the Famous Old Time Music Co.

• Annual Chili Cook Off, with hot dogs and Beer tasting available.

• Fall Farmers Market – Baked goods – Crafts – Garden Produce.

Fixin' up the "back door"

I was working quietly, minding my own business and then it happened. The building began to vibrate, the grinding, groaning and beeping sounds of God only knows what permeated my very being! I dashed to the window to witness what I was sure was the end of the world and here's what I saw:

Well, the drainage project behind the Lockkeeper's House is moving right along. All of the culverts and tile have been installed, and they are now putting things back in order behind the building. I am amazed at how these guys can operate this heavy equipment in such tight quarters, all at the same time! They will fill everything in, re create the west driveway and parking area, and eventually pave everything over. They may even bring back the masons who finished the foundation of the Lockkeeper's House to install the same stone on the faces of the culverts for a nice finished look. In the spring they will install the finish paving layer and paint parking spaces. That ought to bring the major construction to a final conclusion!

I'm also told that before we get too far into winter, the Village plans to brick the towpath from the Lock One parking lot up to the bow bridge. That will make for a very smooth walking entrance into the Lockkeeper's House. Also, the signage for the building is being constructed and will be installed before too much longer. That will help folks figure out that the Chamber is in here, and what this place is all about. There's nothing but excitement around here these days!

Here it is, the world's largest ever pumpkin pie! (Thanks to Jared from New Bremen for the video!)

Twenty feet across, 3,600+ lbs, a new Guiness World Record Pumpkin Pie was baked this past weekend at the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers Association Annual Pumpkinfest. They broke their own record, set back in 2005 with a twelve foot, 2020 lb pie.

The crust was made by a local baker Susan Krieg of The Pie Shell, the oven was custom built and included a computer controlled burner system that then served as a cooling system after the pit was done baking. Visit www.growgiants.com for photos and videos of Pumpkinfest.

This is the same group that in years past has dropped pumpkins on cars from cranes here, raced pumpkins down Plum St in golf cart frames, and sailed pumpkins down the Miami and Erie Canal here.

Canal Diggers Affair

Our good friends at the Miami and Erie Canal Corridor Association (MECCA) are holding their first annual "Canal Diggers Affair" fundraiser on Saturday September 25th, 2010 at the Eagles Lodge in St. Marys. The event will begin at 6:00 pm, with dinner being served at 7:00 pm. Tickets for the event cost $20.00 each. The menu will feature pulled pork BBQ and a special ale brewed by the Wooden Shoe Brewery of Minster.

Recently, I was given a copy of "Hardware Retailing," the trade publication of the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) www.nrha.org. And to my delight (not really surprised however), Scott and Linda Kuenning, the owners of our very own Western Ohio True Value Hardware are smiling at me from the cover of the magazine. Their industry featured their business in a piece about retailing and marketing for home and garden product lines. If you've ever been to their store (and who hasn't?), it's easy to see why they were featured in the magazine. The home and garden section of their store has grown and has been expanded extensively over the years. The folks at Western Ohio True Value Hardware have really given us a great example of how to market products and take care of customers. It's also important to note that the Kuennings have been very supportive of our efforts to help our local retailers grow and brand themselves.

Pumpkins along the canal!!

The New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers will hold their annual Pumpkinfest at the Crown Pavilion along the Miami and Erie Canal in New Bremen on Saturday September 25th. In honor of their 5th anniversary for the event, they've decided to shatter their current Guinness World record for the largest pumpkin pie ever baked. In 2005, during the inaugural Pumpkinfest, they prepared and baked a 12' diameter pumpkin pie. This year, the plan is to prepare and bake a 20' GIANT pumpkin pie! They unveiled the pie pan during the Bremenfest parade last weekend and what an eye opener THAT was!

They will begin preparing the pie for baking around 5:00 am Saturday morning. Pumpkin Pancake breakfast will be served at 7:00 am. The fun run will start at 9:00, with the 5K beginning at 9:30 am. Various events and activites will take place throughout the day. You can visit their site at www.growgiants.com for a detailed schedule of events, or stop by the chamber office in the LKH and grab a schedule. Highlights will include pumpkin beer, pumpkin brats, the OSU Buckeyes on the giant big screen TV, the annual giant pumpkin weigh-in, pumpkin pie eating contest and of course the world record pie will be served around 5:00 pm. The Reaganomics hit the Crown Pavilion stage at 8:00 for an evening of rock-n-roll and fun!

I'd like to thank the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers for this little gem of a festival. They attract growers from around the midwest, and spectators/festival goers from around the region. With the world record pumpkin pie attempt, this year should prove to be a well attended event. So, if you're wandeirng around New Bremen that weekend and you see someone with a pumpkin beanie (complete with a stem) on their head, chances are they are one of the NB Giant Pumpkin Growers. Give them a pat on the back and tell them thanks for doing their part to make our area unique and loaded with character(s)!

There's talk of improvements being made to the canal towpath between Minster and New Bremen. We're circulating the information below on a flyer in the chamber newsletter but I'd like to ask all of you readers what your opinion is, as we collect feedback from the residents on New Bremen and Minster.

"In the interest of keeping our Miami Erie Canal Towpath from Minster to Lock Two utilized with the best interest of all in mind, a group from Minster and New Bremen met recently to discuss future improvements to the path. There is a positive climate now in getting grants for recreational and transportation alternatives. With that in mind, the decision was made to poll residents of Minster and New Bremen to hear what improvements they would like to see made to this connector between our two villages.

We would like to hear your suggestions as to what you would like to see. We are starting with a blank canvas with this opportunity in the hopes of making the towpath a feature of our villages that we can all be proud of and that can be used to its greatest potential.

Business Incentives

About 20 folks joined us at the Lockkeeper's House yesterday for a presentation on business incentives for economic development. Jerry Good (Ohio Dept of Development) and Karen Mauch (New Bremen Econ Development Director) discussed several different tools and programs available to businesses and residents for development, expansion, creation of businesses and for the development of real estate. Good covered state-level programs, while Mauch discussed the local incentives, typical for a community like New Bremen.

There are tax credit incentives, bond programs, and grants available, depending upon what is specifically needed by a particular business. The primary point taken away from the event by attendees is, that it's never too early to discuss incentives with an economic development professional. The message was clear: "Don't wait until it's too late to begin inquiring about available incentives." In most cases, if a business has already broken ground on a project or has already signed financing documents, its probably too late to apply for economic development incentives. It is best for business owners to contact their local economic development professional and the Ohio Dept of Development to get specifics on the various programs.

Bremenfest a success!

Whew, the old knees and legs ain't what they used to be!!

After 4 and a half hours cooking fries in the Rotary food tent Saturday night, marching with the NB HS Marching Band in the Bremenfest Parade Sunday, and three hours of grilling in the food tent Sunday, this guy is sore lol.

I'd have to say that based on the crowds this weekend, Bremenfest has put the wraps on yet another successful festival! We're grateful to all the Bremenfest Committee members who work so hard every year, all year long to put on such a great weekend. Their efforts help to raise a lot of money that goes back into worthwhile investments in the community. They've invested in the students, parks, Lockkeeper's House, the village. We're fortunate to have such a group in New Bremen! So, thanks so much to Bremenfest, all of their volunteers and corporate sponsors, and the Village of New Bremen for another great weekend! (I'd also like to congratulate my son, Ian for running a GREAT 5K Sunday morning before he marched with New Bremen Pack 61 Cub Scouts in the parade!)

We opened up the Lockkeeper's House over the weekend and I'd like to thank MECCA and Neal Brady for rolling the canal boat up here, and hanging out over the weekend! I'd like to thank MECCA board member and local historian/writer Ms. Mary Ann Olding for hosting visitors Saturday morning. And, I'd like to thank local historian and New Bremen Village Councilwoman Ms. Delores Steinecker for keeping the doors open over here Staruday and Sunday afternoon. I counted 147 guests in the guestbook who visited the Lockkeeper's House during Bremenfest! Thanks very much to our volunteers!

Chamber Lecture Series off to a great start!

This past Monday (Aug 16) marked the inaugural session in the Chamber Lecture Series. Brian Miller and Terry Mescher presented a program outlining the details of the efforts to improve water quality in Grand Lake St. Marys. We had a crowd of about 20 interested citizens on hand to hear the presentations and view the power point information given. Jim Coons with WCSM was on hand to cover the meeting. People had plenty of good questions about what's being done to make improvements at the lake.

Brian is the Assistant Director at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, and he spoke about the plans regarding the removal of the "internal loading" of nutrients in the lake, i.e. the sediment. There are currently two active pilot projects under way at the lake right now, involving aeration of the water column (which may ultimately create a situation where the sediment levels are reduced), and involving the collection of sediments in the tributaries that feed the lake. The Grand Lake Restoration Commission formed last winter, and raised over $500,000.00 locally over two months this spring to get these two pilot programs in place. Terry spoke about the "external loading" (nutrients entering the lake from the watershed) issues and the plans being developed to address those. Proposed plans by the State of Ohio include requiring the agricultural producers to create nutrient management plans by Dec of 2012 that clearly identify how they will manage fertilizers and manure within their operations. Also, the state proposing that producers cannot apply manure to frozen or snow covered ground, and not during the time period from December 15 to March 1. This will help some of the more drastic nutrient runoff issues in the water shed.

The program ran just over an hour long, and people seemed pleased at what they learned. I received several positive comments about hosting the program for the community. We will continue to monitor the situation at the lake and do our part to help bring about a solution.

Please excuse the lack of posts this past week. I was spending my hot, roasty days on the new marching band tower at New Bremen High School all week last week. You see, it was marching band camp for the Cardinal Marching Band, and I have been blessed to be selected as an assistqant marching band director for this upcoming season. Due to the busy schedule with the band, I was not left with sufficient time to post on this blog.

The view from the LKH this morning has morphed somewhat! The carneys are in town! Bremenfest runs this weekend, August 20-22. The rides and attractions arrived in town over the weekend, and the hustle and bustle of festival week is upon us. Be sure to check out the line-up of activities for the weekend on the chamber website at www.auglaize.org. My brother and his family of 6 are coming down from Michigan to enjoy Bremenfest this weekend. This marks the third time they've made the two hr trek down to hang out with us. The kids love the rides and games and who doesn't love all the awesome food and entertainment!!

As I sit and write this, I'm enjoying an amazing morning breeze blowing through the LKH, in stark contrast to the heat we've been "enjoying" recently. This weather looks to be the norm for the week, so make your plans to come on out and enjoy all that Bremenfest and the canal in NB have to offer. We have plans to have the LKH open during the weekend for folks to come enjoy the displays and learn a bit about the canal. Here's to hoping we can have the windows open all week!

a helping hand

I think it's time I took a chance here... The folks over at the lake are struggling mightily. I know my gig here at the Lockkeeper's House is to focus on driving commerce and working to improve our quality of life here in the Golden Triangle. However, we need to branch out, to reach out to our friends over at the lake.

So, I am suggesting that we take a little money, hop in the car and go do something over around the lake. Go to dinner, maybe have a drink and enjoy a nice sunset from a local restaurant (driving home safely, and drinking responsibly, of course!). Perhaps we might do something to help drive a little business their way after an awful turn of events, and a difficult summer. I know we'd sure appreciate if they did the same for us if we were in a bind. In this case, I think it's alright if maybe I suggest we take a buck or two out of our market and support a business or two at the lake. Think about it!

On another, more local note. I snuck into the LKH Sunday afternoon for a bit of quiet work time, and to return our table and chairs back home from the fair. Well, much to my surprise, came a knock on the door, and here was a family, just snooping round the front of the building. It turns out they were part of a large family reunion taking place down in Lion Club park. So,I told them to go get everyone and take a walk through the building. As always, I met some very nice and really interesting folks, and even ran across a friend or two I hadn't seen in some time. It pays to welcome people into your home!

Monday was a quiet day here in the LKH. I only had a couple people stop by on Chamber business and a just a few curiosity seekers stuck their heads inside for a look around. Tuesday was an entirely different story! In fact, I was so busy with a steady stream of folks in the morning, my departure for a luncheon meeting was delayed 30 minutes. Several families visited, some with small kids. A few older travelling couples visited and asked lots of questions. We talked local history, canal history and even a bit about the future of the canal and how wonderful it is that the canal is once again creating an economy, however small that economy might be at the moment.

Today, it's back to a quiet, more "chamber business related" day. We've only had a couple of single visitors take a quick look around before moving on. Whatever the traffic may be on a given day, we're seeing many more folks here at the Chamber than we ever had (in the old office downtown) since I began as Executive Director on August 31st of last year. Since the beginning, I've believed that the entire region will ultimately benefit from the Chamber offices being inside the Lockkeeper's House. I get a chance now, to talk to many more people, from a wider area than ever before. This gives me the chance to learn more about why people are visiting our area, what they find interesting and where they intend to visit next. This provides us the opportunity to effectively promote small business in the Golden Triangle, and let folks know what else is here to be discovered and enjoyed.

Probably the single most often heard comment is "I cannot believe how nice these little communities are." "The homes are well kept, the farms are clean and tidy. The businesses are classy looking and everything is in it's place." If I had a dollar for every time I'd heard someone go on and on about how quaint, clean and nice things are here in the Golden Triangle I could probably take some time off without pay!

I believe we really have a great asset here with the Lockkeeper's House that if developed and promoted properly, can become a destination for folks as they travel around and through our area. We can fulfill once again, the original mission of the Miami and Erie Canal when it was first conceived and constructed: to bring commerece to and from western Ohio and eastern Indiana.

the "Chamber Lecture Series"

We've got this great facility for meetings upstairs and the Chamber has some big plans! The Chamber Lecture Series gets under way this month in the upstairs meeting room. The first installment will take place Monday August 16th from 5:30 until 6:30 pm, and will feature Brian Miller, Asst. Park Director at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park. This event will be open to the general public, seating is limited so RSVP right away. If there is sufficient interest, we'll open a second session at 7:00 pm. Brian will be giving an update on the efforts to improve water quality in the lake.

We'll begin a three part business series on August 25th with a presentation by Jerry Good, with the Ohio Dept. of Development and Karen Mauch, Village of New Bremen Economic Development Director. They will discuss the various state and local resources available for business expansion in Ohio. The second installment in the business series will be held on September 16th where Chris Granata (Ohio Dept. of Development), Zach Goldsmith (Workforce Investment Act Area 8) and John Recker (Ohio Dept of Development) will discuss workforce development and human resource development resources at the state level. The third installment will take place at some point after the second session, a date has not been set.

Also in September, we'll host Jim Kent from Wapakoneta for a historical presentation on "Breweries on the Miami and Erie Canal. This CLS event is a presented in partnership with Neal Brady and MECCA, and the Auglaize Historical Society.

So, we've got some great programming coming up here at the Lockkeeper's House. Once again, the Miami and Erie Canal is home to commerce, concern and historic interest!

It's that time of year once again folks! The Auglaize County Fair opens on Sunday, August 1st and your Chamber of Commerce is supporting the fair and your local businesses and organizations with a new program this year!

We've rented a 10X10' booth space in the commercial building (north end of the fairgrounds, near the main gate) and given chamber members an opportunity to rent the space for a day from us. The rental includes booth space, use of an 8' table and chairs, a one day parking pass and one admission to the fair. This should provide an excellent opportunity for chamber members to market their business without making the required week long time investment at $200.00 booth rental, $25 season pass rental and daily parking or long hike in from the free parking areas.

As a former small (TINY) business owner, I could never spare the time to spend an entire week at the fair and the expense was tough to justify as well. By running this program, we can save our members the time and financial committment normally required to exhibit at the fair. If there is enough interest for next year, maybe we'll rent two booth spaces!

Hopefully, the weather will be nice and the crowds will be large over in Wapak this coming week at the fair. Having been raised as a farmer back in rural western NY state where I grew up, we always looked forward to the fair, showing livestock & spending the week there. So, this time of year is always a favorite of mine. We'll head over later in the week for my son's Cloverbuds project and check out all of the livestock, rides, great food and maybe even enjoy some free entertainment at the grandstand.

Whatever your favorite thing is at the fair, be sure to get over there and take it all in!

I've been working on the calendar here at the Locckeeper's House. I want to keep follks coming round, and keep folks interested in what's going on with our newest asset in the Golden Triangle. I see the LKH as a "gateway" to the region, and with the right management, marketing and promotion, I think we can have a really world-class facility that tells a wonderful tale of our history and I believe, of our future as well.

From a present day perspective, the chamber will be hosting meetings and gatherings here. We're developing the "Chamber Lecture Series" and we're about to kick things off at last! Brian Miller from Grand Lake St Marys State Park will come give a talk on the situation at the lake, and what's currently being done to improve water quality. This is an issue that affects us all and we need to not only be aware, but we need to know what we can do to help. Brian's program(s) will be open to the public on a first come-first serve/RSVP basis as we only have room for 38 folks upstairs. Later in September, we'll have another public program, "Breweries of the Miami and Erie Canal" that will shed some light on the ancient art of beer brewing as it has been practiced along the canal.

We've got a few programs lined up for chamber members, including a presentation on the various small business growth incentives available through the Ohio Department of Development, Region 3. The New Bremen Community Improvement Corporation will present the program, along with ODOD Region 3. Minster Bank will present a program for chamber members in September about how the health care reform laws will affect small business and investment. We're also in the planning stages of putting together a workforce development program, and an advertising/marketing program or two for chamber members.

a witness to history

I was happy to be a witness to history today. Not New Bremen history... Not Auglaize County history... Not even Ohio history... This is big, this is US/worldwide history. This year, the Boy Scouts of America are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of their founding in 1910. To commemorate this remarkable achivement, the US Postal Service created a special stamp. Today, the stamp was released to the public. Our local Post Office, along with the New Bremen American Legion Post 241, and several local Scouts, gathered together to celebrate the new stamp.

New Bremen Post Mistress Cindy Fishbaugh was on hand to explain the commemorative stamp program and to sell and postmark the new stamps. Local Scout Curt Brookhart gave a presentation on the history and founding of the Boy Scouts of America and its founder Robert Baden-Powell. Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scouts in 1907, and in 1910 the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated in the US. The New Bremen American Legion Post 241 is the charter organization of our local Boy Scout Troop 95 and St Paul UCC is the charter orgranization of the New Bremen Pack 61 Cub Scouts, of which my son and I are proud members.

It was nice to see Scouts in uniform out to represent the rich tradition of Boy Scouting and Cub Scouting in New Bremen, I was certainly proud to be there in my uniform. The success of Troop 95 and Pack 61 is due in no small part to the support they receive from their charter organizations and the community. Both the Legion and St Paul UCC are member of our local chamber of commerce, which speaks volumes about their commitment to our community. Chamber member Holy Redeemer Church recently chartered a Venture Crew, another branch of Scouting.

my first "tour"

For the brief time I've spent in the building today, it sure has been busy! I've been out on business errands most of the day. But this morning, I met a family from Ladbergen Germany who was visiting with a local New Knoxville family. They were fascinated with the Lockkeeper's House, and eager to learn about and share their knowledge of the history of our communities. As you may know, New Knoxville was settled by families from Ladbergen Germany, an example of "chain migration." It was a wonderful experience, speaking with folks who have an historical connection in Germany with the folks who settled our area. The visit gave me that "it's a small world" feeling for sure!

This afternoon, a group of about 40 tourists came by for a visit. This presented my first opportunity to give a talk on the history of the canal through New Bremen, the history of the building, how a lock works, the reservoir systems and how the canal was constructed. I remembered my facts pretty well, and was able to answer most questions without trouble. The folks were from around Ohio and Michigan, coming to the area for some sort of get-together.

Such was my introduction to the world of the museum docent and tour guide! My brief career with the Chamber has provided me with many interesting experiences and brought me into contact with many interesting people.. Being the "lock tender" so to speak, will no doubt provide some of the most interesting experiences I'll enjoy as chamber director. I love the "people part" of this job!

Neal Brady (MECCA) and I were sitting in my office the other day (as we often do), trying to think of ways to get more folks involved with the Lockkeeper's House and possibly even raise some funds. Neal shared an idea with me, for a poker run, on bikes!! An avid cycling enthusiast, this idea came easily to Neal, and I think it has some merit!

I'd love to see more folks on the towpath, whether it be "through" hikers, families walking dogs, runners, day hikers, cyclists, people fishing, events, whatever. Holding a poker run with bikes would probably bring plenty of folks out, and give us another opportunity to show off the Lockkeeper's House and potentially raise funds for MECCA. As a member of MECCA, the chamber would of course be delighted help put the event on.

We're thinking of a fall afternoon, probably a Sunday. We would come up with a route that cyclists can follow, with stops at various points along the way where riders pick up their cards and build their poker hands. This would be a great opportunity to expose folks to more of the trail and towpath along the canal corridor in this area.

So, I am curious... Does our idea have possibilities? Are you interested out there? Give us your thoughts! If you know someone who is into cycling/outdoor recreation, shoot this post to them, get their input, share it with us. I think we just might have something here!

Chamber members step up to raise funds!

The 11th Annual "Golden Triangle Open" fundraiser was held last Thursday, July 15th at Arrowhead Park Golf Club in Minster. This was my first time ever putting on and hosting a golf outing. I've played in dozens of outings, but I've never played host to an outing. To say that things well went would pretty well describe the day. While it was "smokin" hot as my wife would say, we had a great turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Ashley Wilt (the PGA pro at Arrowhead) and his staff in the clubhouse and restaurant did an EXCELLENT job of hosting us. There was very little for us to do the day of the event and things went perfectly. He even helped us sort out the three-way tie between the top three teams. (the Buschur Electric team took 1st place, Minster Bank took 2nd, Upper Cervical Health Centers took 3rd.) Jay Purdy (Community Insurance Group, Minster and Chamber Board Member) helped me put this year's event together and his advice and assistance were indispensable. Thanks Jay for all of your support and GREAT ideas! Unique Awards and Signs in St Marys created the signage for the hole sponsorships once again this year, and they did a great job for us as always! Wally and Nancy Wagner stepped up as usual, sponsoring a hole, a team and running the annual "hit the green, win $100 gift cert to Wagner's IGA" contest. Nancy sat out on #6 tee all afternoon and raised $245.00 for us. Wally stepped up an purchased one of the silent auction items as well so thanks to them!

In all, we raised nearly $5,000.00 per early estimates. This event is the primary fundraiser for the chamber, and the support of chamber members (and a couple non-members, possibly future members) is appreciated so very much! The Dannon Company and Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen stepped up as this year's "Golden Triangle" sponsors. Heritage Manor Nursing Center and Minster Bank were this year's "Silver Tee" sponsors, and Brookside Laboratories; Buschuer Electric, Inc.; Community Insurance Group, Minster; HA Dorsten, Inc.; Joint Township District Memorial Hospital; NK Telco, and Wagner's IGA were this year's "Bronze Birdie" sponsors. Seventeen teams registered this year, up from 13 last year and we had 16 hole sponsors for this year's event. Once again, thanks so very much to all of the participants and sponsors!
